Some of you are acting like they are putting your name out there with your salary. That would be incorrect. They are stating that a corp has to post the salary range for that position in a job posting.
It doesn't matter why I want my salary to be private, only that I do...and it definitely doesn't matter why someone else thinks my salary shouldn't be. Privacy doesn't come from the consent of others. If I get paid less than you, good for you. I couldn't care less even if you do less work than I do. I suppose I value privacy more than pay differences. The nice thing for you is that many people agree with you, and some of those people freely report their pay on various pay-sharing web sites out there, so the information is available to you and there's no need to know my pay when others freely share theirs.
I disagree. Paying everyone based on their experience and quality of work should determine salary. If my co-worker and I are hired at the same time and do the same job but they make more than me it should be clear why so I can work harder to get that same pay if that is something I am interested in. Currently I am on a team where everyone had more years of experience than I did when I was hired but we do the exact same job and they potentially make 30k+ more than I do. I would expect that once my years of experience equal theirs at the time of hire then I would also make 30k more. In our current system there is every opportunity for those in charge to not pay me equally to my peers because this is all behind a curtain. No incentive to be fair and equitable. Full disclosure is capitalistic in that everyone has the same opportunity for success and success is tied to contributions.
Do you all want to live in socialism/communism? If everybody will have the same pay there will be no incentive for people to do work. Right now pay is a motivator for ppl to do their work as well as be creative. Companies should adjust pays according to market for all employees not only for new-hires. This will motivate people.
The easy and obvious solution to that problem is to not pay people wildly different salaries for the same job, OR, demonstrate to the lower paid employee exactly why their coworker makes more (higher quality work, etc.). Which a company should absolutely be able to do.
Yeah but what specifically would you be worried about? Especially knowing that you're getting value from the transparency. Your privacy is NOT why a company wants your salary to be a secret. They don't want you to know that your peers make more, or, they don't want your peers to know that you make more. Why not just pay equally for the same work? It's not hard to do, in fact it's easier than the current system.
I know emotionally it might seem like someone knowing your salary is akin to knowing your ATM pin (or something along those lines) but it's really not.
Anyone can disclose their salary to anyone else, it's established case law now. That said, what if I don't want everyone in the world to know my pay? Way to much of our information is already 'out there'. Some people value privacy.
You will get spite. “Why is Tom making 15k more than me when we do the same job.” Sure the employer/manager will bear some brunt to explain, but the Tom’s in the world will also feel the pain with more scrutiny and bitterness from teammates, even though “Tom” didn’t do anything wrong. Trust me, I’ve seen this happen.
Well just wait until you see million dollar packages here in WF for high ranking financial leaders. Then this site will really blow up. I have nothing to hide. Bring it on. Educational institutions do it. Shocking to see associate professors making 350K at large polytech institutions.
Actual salaries being confidential only hurts the employee and only helps the employer. It helps the employer pay some people less money than others to do the same job.
I wish everyone's salaries were posted everywhere.
And if you're worried about it, why? What bad thing specifically do you think would happen to you if others knew your pay?
I just saw a compensation range for CO residents of $76k-$227k + bonus. I know of no single position that would accommodate such a range of capabilities and experience.
Already required in Colorado.
Complete waste of time.
"We pay between $28,000 and $200,000 per year".
Helpful eh? No. There are many many ways to actually research salaried these days. There's this thing called the "internet" the kids have...
Should be required everywhere
