Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Treat Tech Better

When will WF realize that if they don’t treat their Tech employees better, they’ll just jump to a tech company that actually gives value to work-life balance and employee flexibility to work remotely with better pay? These tech companies have no strict business casual dress code, free employee perks, and way better pay. I’ve met some super intelligent tech employees here and I have no idea what they’re doing at this bank. These executives going back on their word about technology getting more leniency in coming back to the office just made the worst move ever. Anyone in tech can easily find a fully remote job because the job can be done remotely!!! Technology is the future and if the bank doesn’t invest in that area, then good luck Charlie!

Do we really have any technology workers with current valuable skill sets? As far as I can tell our tech is a wreck.

What… if anything… am I missing?

And jobs that require an office can be done offshore too, or by an AI. No one is safe.

Just remember, jobs that can be done remotely can be done offshore.

Our technology is generally 20 to 30 years out of date. No way that anybody skills up enough to talk themselves into a job at a well run bank. Of course if you know somebody or are a helluva salesman you can move to a competitor.

Bank is not a place for people pushing the frontier of technology.

That said, tech is no different from other operational groups. If tech is highly or overly paid for some ad-hoc projects, the high pay shall not be sustainable.

Labor Market prices efficiently in most of time.

There are some very smart people in WF tech, and a whole bunch of managers lacking clues.

This trickles down to the end users, the people here complaining about WF tech.

That said, if you're still at Wells and in IT, why?

The job market is insane right now, and at my new company (left WF months ago, just stop by to see how ya'll doing) we can't get people hired fast enough becuase they keep getting better offers.

Run, don't walk, to a better paying job in a better environment, tech folks.

And let these ingrates see how bad things can really get. :-)

So, what you're saying is if you're in tech and at WF you suck at tech given WF has the worst job conditions because if you were good the more elite jobs would have you?

You must be in tech which proves some of the commenters points - they're m0r0ns.

You're already the most highly compensated and coddled group in the entire company. One can't even go to the restroom anymore without some faceless tech pleeb approving the request first. And did I mention that everything you touch is a complete cluster? You want MORE? Good grief.

Suffice it to say that our execs cannot see past the noses on their faces. Considering many of the recent edicts that have been rained down related to benefits, compensation, RTO, COVID, etc., do you really think they are considering the long term effects of their decisions? They are not worried one iota about tech, or really other employees right now. It is all about hitting their attrition numbers. Why do you think there is zero regard for a measured and intelligent approach to RTO? Doesn’t matter one bit if you will go into an office to never see or interact with anyone on your team. They are laser focused on dumping as many staff as will go, brain drain, skills loss, and risk management be damned.

@ryj because as a new grad in tech, I didn’t realize how much I needed to get out of the banking industry until I actually got my foot in the door at a bank.

No, WF and the banking industry has you scarred for life. Not all companies dangle the layoff tactic in your face….even after 40. There are some good companies out there with way better culture.

The only way Wells Fargo will make it another decade is because of tech. Fintechs are eating banks alive right now. Technology is the only way forward. 40% of the other jobs here won't last more than 10 years, tops.

WF is a bank not a tech company. If you wanted to work for a tech company, why work for a bank (or an insurance company)?

Treat ALL employees better. I’m in tech and I don’t think tech is more special than anyone else in the company.

Someone has a huge ego. When you get laid off after 40 and probably more than once because you aren’t cheap anymore, you’ll lose that.

As a new grad, it’s very clear to me that if I’m in tech, the banking industry is not where I want to be or should be. It’ll only set me back in terms of learning new skills.
