I would like to get a package and leave in the next round of layoffs. I have a pretty good relationship with my manager and I have confidence in him, but I don't know how good an idea it is to let him know that I would like to be the target of the next layoffs. Any thoughts?

@2lik+ This is the brutal side a lot of folks don’t see. you are impacting peoples lives and families.
So true. This is what Verizon's social awareness is all nonsense. They don't take care of their own. You want us to be a V Teamer rah rah, then loyalty works both ways. The good news is the job market right now is strong, so you have options.
I’ve been a Sr Mgr and Assoc Dir. in the past. I’m an individual contributor now. Since RIF’s are common every year we were asked to rank our employees annually in preparation. I also received calls from my Director or VP at 9am telling me to provide 2-3 names by 3pm. This is the brutal side a lot of folks don’t see. I enjoyed being in Management and this goes with the territory. I did lose a lot of sleep though as you are impacting peoples lives and families. Especially if all the dead weight is long gone. Glad to be an IC now. I’ve gone full circle by choice.
I was ready to leave and I notified my manager that I was willing to take the package when the last round of layoffs happened in October. I would give it a shot. Especially since Verizon is trying to reduce head count.
your manager may even ask for volunteers when the time comes. if you're too valuable, they will layoff the chaff.
Absolutely tell him or her. It will save someone else from being laid off.
It worked out well for someone who reported to me; it also helped avoid having to layoff someone else. It turned out I, the manager, had little say in who would be RIF’d so knowing someone willing made it smoother for the higher ups to decide.
Are there any low performers in your group that would be an obvious RIF candidate? If not you will likely be doing your manager a favor by giving a heads up.
Find a better job and quit. Stop looking for a welfare handout.
Tell the boss. If you are ready to leave anyway, what have you got to lose?
I was ready to retire and let my boss know that I should be the nomineee for the RIF. It worked out for me, and my manager only lost 1 slot instead of possibly 2.
Not a good idea.
