Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Medical subsidy for retirees

Correct me if I’m wrong but I see a lot of managers retiring before years end to keep their medical subsidy but … do they have any guarantees that the company won’t just yank it from them after they retire anyway ? I don’t think they do. I think it’s crazy to retire just ok that alone. What am I missing

There are NO guarantees. Just death and taxes. Especially with the amateurs running this company and this country

yes, they sure will, because they have mostly ten more years to work to get social security, believe me it will be cut bad.

Not sure why all of the contentiousness. You're not missing anything, and it seems you know the answer to the question. Most people I know that took the offer and are leaving to keep their subsidy are fully aware that it's not likely they'll keep it until 65. The company goes out of their way to let you know that they can change or revoke any benefits, at any time. That should tell you all you need to know. If you've got 2-3 years you might make it to 65 with the subsidy. If you're early 50's; in my opinion, informed by 25 plus years as a non- bargained for employee... there is no chance you're making to 65. Zero. Zip. Nada. But that's just my opinion. Also, look for your already expensive high deductible high premium insurance to keep getting more and more expensive. To me, as a healthy person in my early 50's it wasn't worth walking away from the income to paycheck to keep a subpar subsidy.

For sure I wish I could whine like you. Your an expert at it see all the previous posts. Do some work instead of constantly venting your frustrations might help you resolve your issues or do you need that in writing too?

"Your" should be "You're". Where is your punctuation starting a new sentence? "Your an expert at it see all the previous posts".

Practice what you preach, Stankey!

You had to join AT&T before 1995 to get any subsidized Healthcare post-retirement. I joined in 1996 and didn't have that option.....but I still retired.

60 yrs old, 41 years of service. I retired two months ago. My original plan was to leave at age 62. But with the subsidy going away I either had to retire now or stay until 65 and hope I didn’t get downsized before then. I knew I didn’t wanna work to 65 so I left two years early with the hope the company doesn’t mess with retiree benefits. Time will tell if I made the right choice.

That's right, run T into the ground and make the employees and retirees pay for it. That's the Stankey way.

When an AT&T retiree reaches 65 years old they can still buy discounted health coverage in addition to medicare. Millennials will have to pay out of pocket. That was the plan, hasta luego…

I would like to look at pulling it from specific populations who don't take care of themselves, smokers or the like, or add some bonus programs to those who exercise or take other measures to be in control of their own health.

There are no guarantees about anything to do with AT&T. I think the retirees are just ready to go anyway and will take whatever benefits are being offered. Anyone who has worked at AT&T long enough to qualify for retirement knows this and has seen all the games the company plays.

Good grief Dude give it a rest its till 65 with the majority of all of us leaving being 60 yrs or older so they were able to look at this as a 5 yr plan to completely rid themselves of future obligation to cover health insurance its really easy understand unless you are a union dreg constantly worried about everything being in writing which same thing that writing is good for you for 3-5 yrs whatever you guys vote for right?

Stankey and Santone = Indian givers. Nuff said! They both deserve nothing more than minimum wage, start paying them what they're worth. Strip all their benefits too.

I don't know a single person who is sorry they left AT&T. Those wanting or needing to continue working find equal or better employment. Those wanting the R&R of retirement find it and love it. Staying guarantees you nothing as well......personal choice so be accountable for your own decisions and stop second guessing or judging others.

No retirement benefits are sade including your pension (unless you take the lump sum before it gets decimated) . Very little retirement benefits for most. Mild the company while you work for what you can. What is happening with our video discounts??????

"Did you have this in writing? Where is your contract? "
Wasn't there a letter? Didn't it say that if an employee did such and such by a certain deadline, they would get something? That is what we would call an "offer".

If the employee then does this such and such by the deadline, that would be construed as "acceptance". Looks like the necessary elements of a contract are present.

This was a way to rid themselves once and for all from rule of 75 it just does not matter anymore for anyone still here. Those numbers even with the subsidy will continue to dwindle until they are completely done once that group hits 65 which quite a few do every year so stop with your all the time constant fin whining about everything under the sun. You have no control over it so stop worrying about it go stop worrying about what the rest of have or don't have

The significantly enhanced lump sum payout from the Legacy Pension Plan for Management employees was the leading motive, the lump sum will be likely be reduced next year due to increasing interest rates.

Stankey and Santone will continue to cut benefits. They think it's funny and they have the power to do it. They have cost me about $100k in retirement benefits that were clawed back. Nothing nobody can do, they don't have a conscience, I hope they both burn in he-l.

There would be a legitimate lawsuit opportunity if T didn’t honor the subsidy for those who retire before end of year. So many posters on this board keep insisting they were promised the subsidy and other options like free phone service for life. Did you have this in writing? Where is your contract?

T will continue to adjust and lower benefits. They have to since given the massive debt load. There will be many who end up regretting not retiring when they realize how much the subsidy is worth! It is a hot job market right now. If you have legitimate skills and still want to work, there are some amazing opportunities out there! The reality is most eligible to retire have been overpaid for a really long time and will struggle to find jobs on the outside. And most know it.

Folks are retiring to rid themselves of AT&T. I know at least ten employees retiring this month and all said its basically because the company has gone down the toilet.

This company does not keep any, none, nada, of the commitments and promises made
to it's loyal employees. That is why knowledgable employees leave ASAP and dont look back.
I retired 20 years ago just to escape that H3LL H0lD.
I was promised a free phone for the rest of my life and when I attempted to get it I was quoted $20 + $9 taxes for my FREE PHONE. Sent an email to Stankey, received a call from
a clueless minority woman who told me that no one gets a free phone. Well, I do, I was promised/guaranteed. I subscribed to Google Voice and don't buy anything from at&t.
So while no guarantee and att lies, I totally understand why employees are jumping ship from the death star.
