Internal open positions

I have a friend who is pretty desperate because he’s riffed. How likely is it that the RIF'd employee finds an internal position? Is it just a false hope he can forget?

Majority of the job postings are for positions that are already filled.

For example, if your boss is able to promote you to a DMTS, they have to post the job. They will write the job description to fit the target person as much as possible, but they still have to interview anyone who applies for it.

And like magic, the person they wanted to get the job is the one best qualified for it.

I have personally hired multiple people that were slated to be rifed. Tell them to apply for everything that opens.

As others have posted, if you have not been specifically tapped by a Director or VP to let you know that they have a slot for you in their organization, then you have no chance.

HR puts that hope out there is minimize lawsuits.

But if you are not part of the new gang, then it really is time to go. They have their plans, almost none of which have worked, so the best time to leave the company is now.

You aren't getting an internal job unless you already have it arranged with the person hiring. It's also a fools errand in the sense that there are so many external jobs, trying to fish the internal pond is a waste of time. I went from band 7 staff at Verizon to Director at a smaller telecom after realizing the internal job board is mostly an illusion.

I guess the real question is why would he ever want to work here. Think of it as a gift they are paying you to work for the competitors. Take a nice vacation. Be happy he will never have to endure the "tragedy" that is verizon.

I have seen probably 5 or 6 reorgs. I personally know people who have applied internally and accepted new positions. The great news is if this isn't the case, those impacted have some paid leave and career services support for applying externally. I wish each of you the best and I am sorry this is happening.

Take the money and run!

If you made it into the company and were able to survive and thrive for a while, you will find that your talents have a higher value to others.

Good luck, fair winds and following seas to you all!

If they are still paying you until 12/31 and you don't have to go into the office, milk it. Take time for yourself. You will not find another position within the company, even if they tell you that it's possible to find another job in another division or organization.

I was told by 4 different hiring managers that I got the job during that time between getting the notification and the off the books date. Suddenly, something changed. Immediately after being told thatbI got the job, I was told that I need to speak with HR as to why I didn't get the job. It's a pipe dream and they do not want you if you've been in for 15 years+ or have some grandfathered benefit that new hires don't.

Also, read the severance package documentation for non-compete clauses after getting let go. You may be barred from getting jobs in similar fields if you take the package. My paperwork stated that I was barred from joining a competitor and certain vendors that interface with the company for 6 months after getting let go.

The best advise I can give you is to not think that this is the end. It'll be hard to bounce back mentally after this company has provided for years of your livelihood. The breakup can be devastating, however building a network of people will help you in finding another job. You have a set of marketable skills, use it to your advantage.

Its possible. Just put on your Ruby slippers, click your heals 3 times and say “There’s no place like T-Mobile”

It’s possible…In my 20 years here, about 25 managers that I worked with (both directly and tangentially) have been riffed. Out of those 25, about 5 went on to find another job within the company. And they still work here years after their initial rif.

I personally know someone who was riffed years ago and found another position in the company. It's possible.
