I remember realizing at one point in time that I was the YOUNGEST person in our Information Technology department at the company I worked for at the time. Thinking
great I get to be with all of these wonderful people who I work with, many of whom helped train me. Later in my career I helped train both younger and older co-workers.
In the later years my co-workers trained me and I trained them in the skills that I had but they did not. This has been a nice lifestyle and career path. Now I realize that I am one of the older Information Technology employees. That has not changed the game. I train you, you train me, what I know I share, what you know you share. This makes for a great work environment.

If you just want a severance packet, just negotiate one. The purpose is to hush you up. Work in settlement, bk, fc, legal or risk, wim, wfa, some exec office with a ton of complaints?? Bo-m! You have a lot you could squeal about. What do you people think the purpose of severance is for? It isn’t a check bc they feel bad for laying you off. It’s to keep you quiet. Tell someone you want to leave after the match and negotiate your exit.
I'm not the OP, but am another person in the same boat.
I'm not going to say a peep about retirement to anyone. Goal is to get the 401k match and the bonus first. After those have been deposited in my account, then I'll re-evaluate as far as giving a notice, or just walking out and letting them figure it out.
Sure, it would be nice to collect severance and unemployment right until retirement. It would be like another bonus. But I'm not counting on that, nor am I sticking around any longer than I want to just in the hopes of getting it. Life at WF is just too miserable for that...
The reason people assume you are retired is because you’ve been working for 45 years and might actually have enough saved to be able to slow down and do whatever the heck you want for the next 20 years.

I was asked by some medical personnel during a routine medical exam if I was retired, just because I told them that I was 65 at that time. I replied 'NO" I am still working. I do not know why some people think that just because you are age 65+ that you plan to retire, or can retire. The current USA President, former USA President and many members of the Congress and Senate are over 70 years old, almost 80 or greater than 80 years old and are still working. People live much longer these days than in the past.

If you need severance or unemployment to make retirement financially viable, you're not financially ready to retire.
I know two people who volunteered to be laid off. One was looking to retire in 2021, and was laid off late last year (60 days notice + 10 months severance). The other actually filed retirement papers and was laid off two weeks before the scheduled retirement date. That person got the standard 60 days paid notice and then another 4 months of severance.
Not really. If you get yourself fired for cause you won’t get unemployment anyway.
If you volunteer for a layoff they’ll keep you around and make your life miserable until you quit.
Your best bet is to put it around that you’re never going to retire. If they think that’s your plan they’ll start looking to get rid of you.
