Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Just got dinged 1% City of St. Louis payroll tax

Been remote in Illinois; today my paycheck reflects a 1% payroll tax deduction for the City of St. Louis - which is where my "unassigned" seat will be Jan 10.

Legal, idk.. but sounds really unethical

Not just income taxes cities want. Mpls for example has additional taxes on food/drink with x miles of new stadium to help pay for it. Think they aren’t missing those lunches everyone went out for?

Congrats, we get to pay for Wells Fargo’s corporatist tax privileges. The PAC doesn’t send all that money to the politicians for nothing!

Could it be that WF gets a tax break based on the number of employees it has in the city? Probably so.

Remote workers aren't the only kind. In any case, if the SCOTUS is cool with remote workers "deriving income" from where ever the company says they are deriving it from regardless of anyone's physical location, than all remote workers will eventually derive it from TX, WA, TN, FL etc. Anyone designating other states simply won't be able to compete. I'm cool with that result, but it's not going to be the result.

What about states like Texas that don't have income tax? Kind of negates your point.

Almost glad that I live and work in a state without income taxes!

Wow- I think I finally understand why they are pushing so hard for RTO. Cities are pushing employers to go back so they can collect their taxes. Never made the connection before.

All of us who live in Illinois but normally work in Missouri have been paying Missouri taxes and 1percent city tax since March of 2020. I talked to my manager during the summer to get it changed. They said can't be done bc I am assigned to work in St.louis.

"Contact the Ethics line on Monday."

LMAO! If the Supreme Court refused to hear the State of New Hampshire complaining about it, what the he-l makes you think the Ethics Line is gonna care about you?

"If all it takes is the company "saying" where we derive our income from, no states with income taxes would have employees. Clearly there's a little more too it than Michael Scott declaring things."

With remote workers, it is a matter of them declaring it. The Supreme Court refused to hear the case when New Hampshire sued Massachusetts for taxing its residents who were declared to be working in the state, so that's the law: they can do it.

But what do I know, I'm just an ignorant lawyer.

Hmmm …. Could it be that payroll is still operating from some old memo about when RTO begins? Wells Fargo isn’t known for their effectiveness at turning on a dime.

FYI - Payroll is in India now. I just had to call on a different matter. Definitely a language barrier going both ways, but the woman did end up getting the issue solved for me.

Technically the OP now works in STL

Happening to me too… why this was made effective now when we don’t RTO until next year is not right. I had just moved to SC now they moved me to Charlotte after we had previously changed my office to Fort Mill sc. My manager now claims he can’t change it back. Um, why not? The whole thing is bs and doesn’t sound legal to me. And yesterday we were just told no one on our team can go to Fort Mill so 2 others are now out of luck too. Madness.

Wait until they deem that you owe them "Back Taxes" from some arbitrary date determined by them.

Think it can't happen...? Think again.

Ask me how I know.

@qrj when your work location changes you pay the tax of the locality for your work location. If OP was a field rep or some other title that allowed him/her to work in IL then it was avoided. If OP now reports into the St. Louis office they will be charged the city tax.

@uoa+1d6MQEHy

But if you don't live in that city and don't work in that city, how can you be charged a tax?

There was a big war fought over this 245 years ago.

Consider yourself lucky that you haven't been paying this tax for years. STL has specifically said too that working from home doesn't make you exempt. STL is majorly hurting from this pandemic and they are just changing the rules to grasp onto any revenue they can.

This is normal. Our office is in the city of st Louis. Usually we can keep track of our work time away and submit a form to refund any city tax collected when we work remote, but because of COVID, the city suspended that this past year.

This has been a debate in STL for the past year. I believe employers were told to continue collecting the tax, and STL city will give you a refund only if you ask for it. Pretty ridiculous but I think that’s how it works right now.

Anyone that is not currently working in a state, that charges a tax, you need to contact your manager to update your work location and then contact hr to open a case to reverse the tax payment. I had the same thing happen to me- at more than $500/paycheck. I was not currently in that location and living/working in a no tax state. Took a week or so but the taxes got reversed. Once you’re actually working in that location you’ll have to pay the tax.
