You can no longer assume zz means that a person is terminated. When a Business person takes their mandatory 2 weeks they get zz during that two weeks. However, if someone in Technology has a zz they are no longer employed at WF. Like the others said zy is leave of absence or long term leave. Of course a zy can turn into a zz for various reasons like a long term illness, etc.
ZZ Top was much more successful than ZY Top

So many of you have no clue, you've just assumed things. zz is a termination, zy is a leave. Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed.
ZY has been used with laid off individuals who came back to work and were then let go again also
zz is for resigned and laid off. zy is for those who left due to lack of documentation like visa issue.
I've also seen zy used for suspended employees during investigation of harassment claims against them.
zz is a termination, either voluntary or involuntary. zy is inactive or leave of absence such as medical leave or severance.
They're not gonna make your termination conditions apparent by putting a code in front of your name. Every oopsie by IT or HR would be a libel.
I'm pretty sure a friend of mine who went on LOA for over a year was zy. She still works at the bank today, zy removed when she returned to work.
zz is for voluntary terms, zy is involuntary.
That mandatory leave also applies to all traders. It's to prevent certain forms of fraud that can float about unnoticed for years at a time if the trader can trade year-round.
Then there's the garden period for certain execs, where when you're fired you're kept on payroll for up to a year so that you've forgotten your trade secrets, business strategies, etc, or they've all become moot, before you are permitted to work for another employer.
Should be noted that certain WIM Operations employees (even snr managers) have to take two weeks unpaid leave. During that time they are flagged zz.
