Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

For those of us in a non East coast hub...what do you think the long term survival will be?

I am in Des Moines, IA. While listed as a hub today I do not see that lasting for more than another 5 years. The culture here just does not mesh with the East coast and I have heard enough (not so subtle) digs about Des Moines to know the executive Leadership does not value the location nor its people. I suspect the same is true with Minneapolis, MN.

Thoughts?

With all the obsession about costs it is absurd that the company would go away from lower salary regions. Yeah, let's hire in the bay area and NY tri-state.

There's not a lot that we do that requires the kind of expertise to be in those states.
It would be hilarious to see what they'd with Jordan Creek if they did exit Des Moines. That place is huge, who the he-l would take that over?

Ever been to Minneapolis? In the last 5 years or so?

If the property is leased, likely it will be closing before the lease is up. Business property doesn't lease for just one year.

I don’t know…I’m sure there are more factors but it seems like if they really want us all back in offices they would want to keep people that live in states with lower real estate costs.

Areas like Des Moines and Minneapolis also do not help enough to check off the DEI boxes, so can see at least downsizing if not full on exiting.

As a Des Moines employee who's benefited greatly from several of the San Fran jobs being moved to Des Moines in the last year, I doubt they're planning on closing this HUB anytime soon.

West Des Moines is considered the same as Des Moines. Many jobs there are ripe for automation, and as automation rolls across the enterprise, many of those jobs will dry up overnight. Many of you have been training the machines and not even realizing it. Got a job that requires specific clicks, specific times, or specific responses? Cut and Paste the same thing into multiple jobs/processes per day? Your time is shorter than you'd think.

There's a good chance it wont be around for more than 5 years. You see, many executives absolutely hate traveling there. Same with St. Louis. Minneapolis is heading that direction too, but stands a much better chance than Des Moines does, which is why so many BUs are being scaled back in Des Moines but allowed to keep staff in Minnesota. I give it less than 5 years before at least 75% of jobs in Des Moines are gone. You'll be surprised at how fast it goes too. It will happen just like it did in Sioux Falls (which had more promise than Des Moines did). Watch for exec positions to leave first, then executives that want to keep their jobs, then everyone else.

Des Moines has always held itself in high regard - like San Francisco - but things are pushing east. You can forget about leasing or buying new properties in places like (LOL) Wyoming or Nevada as the previous poster mentioned - Won't happen. Big metropolitan areas with enough staff to cover the higher churn we will have is what they want these days. They will utilize existing buildings in those metropolitan areas/hubs and max out seating as much as they can instead.

Corporations are abandoning small towns, low population states, and metro areas they see as undesirable...which is pretty much everything west of the smokies outside of TX, CA, WA, etc.

What Roanoke services are moving to MN? Significant? Thanks

Des Moines is fine. You should be more worried if you’re in Philly or SF.

Noticed some services done in Roanoke, VA are being moved to Minneapolis, MN so this may not be a good sign for Roanoke. Also there is a small site in Columbia, SC which may be cut.

Who wants to live in po dunk Des Moines or Minneapolis and freeze their butts off 8 months a year with nothing to do but avoid BLM protests and stay warm? The company should move out and place those roles in the south or even a non income tax state like NV, WY or NH.

They spent a lot on adding the solar farm to the WDM campus. Doubt that will close.

plus wf is one of the largest if not the largest employer in DM, if they were looking to leave I'd bet the state and local government would step on with some nice incentives to stay.

I am supposed to relocate there this Fall. It's a huge campus, but this company changes with the wind, nobody can ever make long term decisions working at this he!!ho-e company. The only long term decision you can count on is to leave.

I think Des Moines is one of the safest. It's a low cost area and has alot of employees already.

Chase’s #2 location is Columbus, Ohio. New York bank can deal with an educated Midwest workforce, priced right.

Des Moines is fine. low cost of living. west coasters have been making fun of mid western folks for years at this point. I'd worry more if I was in California, like risk. within the next year+ they will be gone, already started.
