Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Is medical leave strictly for physical conditions?

Does anyone know if Lincoln Financial approves medical leaves for emotional illnesses (such as a major depressive episode), or is it only for physical conditions?

I'm asking here because people ask all sorts of otherwise uncomfortable questions here, and more importantly because I don't feel like including management yet. If I went straight to Lincoln with a claim, I'd have to first tell my manager I'm considering leave, etc and I don't want to do that unless I'm reasonably sure that I'll actually be able to take the leave.

I thought there was a law about 10 years ago giving mental health equal parity with physical health as it pertains to insurance, but I'm not the expert.

(And, I can already hear all the "toughen up" responses, and I guess that's just what goes along with posting here, but it's worth it if one person can provide accurate insight.)

Do not tell your manager anything. They will get a letter once approved Talk to your doctor about approving you for time off, therapy and Short Term Disability. You'll need to file for FMLA to protect your job. Be sure to leave his office with letter in hand or prior to filing. You have to take 7 Consecutive days of PTO for short term D. Read the benefit book carefully. Be prepared to provide all docs to LF online and on time so you get paid. When you return if you feel the slightest bit of retaliation from your mngr file a federal and internal complaint.. Good luck

Mental health is health.

You can spot the people here who needs treatment by how mean they are in the replies, for no reason other than they get off on it.

Losers.

FMLA and Lincoln does apply to mental illness. I had one of my directs have an episode 2 years ago (outside and unrelated to work). It was covered.

Yes, this is possible as long as you have a treating doctor who sends in the proper paperwork and justification. It falls under FMLA (don’t listen to the person who said it doesn’t), and your short-term disability will run concurrently with your FMLA so you will have job protection for 12 weeks or 480 hours.

OP, as someone else mentioned, you don't need to tell your manager. In fact I think it's best not to. You don't need their prejudices or ignorance to lead them to judge you. You may work for someone who thinks you should "tough it out" and makes things difficult for you. I wouldn't tell co-workers either, unless they're a close friend. I've seen co-workers stalking the sick person on Facebook, noting any time they leave the house, and reporting it to management. Also if it's approved sick leave, it should be covered by FMLA.

Note >> Unless it's FMLA or maternity leave, WF can let you go while youre on disability (STD or LTD). e.g. elimination of role

Yes you can definitely apply for STD through Lincoln for a mental health issue. Your treating provider can be your regular physician, a mental health provider or Psychiatrist. You also do not need to tell your manager the reason for applying for a leave.

Yes OP, they do approve leave for mental health. I have done it before in the past and my co worker is on short term leave for a mental break.

Start the paperwork and take time off

My take is if you're diagnosed with some sort of mental illness then you'd probably qualify. Go check out the employee handbook for details though.

yes, it is a valid reason but you'll need a medical diagnosis from your doctor. "stress leave" as it's commonly known is common here and I wish people wouldn't be so heartless to think people under this are faking something!

I hate people who abuse this. I worked with someone who kept using this over and over and guess who had to pick up their work, yeah me. This women would have minor stress and vanish out of the blue for months with a belly ache. She would be perfectly fine, a problem would hit, she would watch netflix for 3mo and leave me her atomic bo-b of a mess.

You'll need a medical diagnosis. You can't just ask off because you're feeling down.

Yes a colleague of mine was able to go out on medical leave for stress and anxiety. I’m not exactly sure what her diagnosis was. Talk to your doctor. They’ve seen it before.

Yes. Mental health is a large part of medical care. It’s important. I don’t know who you are but I am thinking of you. Please take care.

Yes, Lincoln Financial will approve medical leave for emotional illnesses. A prior co-worker of mine at Wells was out for 3-4 months for this reason.
