DId you ever begin to tell someone that you work for Wells Fargo, and then have to insert the disclaiming word, "but".
They, "Where do you work?"
You. " Oh, I work for Wells Fargo, BUT I didn't work with that group that got into trouble for fraud."
Thank goodness the word BUT exists in our lexicon
Person I just met: "So where do you work?"
Me: "It's a large bank"
Person: "Oh, which one?"
Me: uncomfortably shuffles "uhh... it's Wells Fargo"
Person: "Ohhhh.... well... that's ok! That's fine! That's great!"
Me: "yea... they've been in the news for a while now"
Person: "Oh.... yea I heard about all the scandals. So are you looking for something else?"
Me: "Yea"
Fortunately, I won't be having these conversations much more in the future as I'm getting out of the dumpster fire in a couple weeks.

To the OP - all the time! Always had to say I wasn't in retail. But, at end of day, it's guilt by association. I had to leave. I would avoid this organization like the plague if I could have a do-over. I threw away all the stupid little WFC-branded trinkets they sent me over the years - stage coach pin, etc. And for retirement, they send you a useless Lucite desk piece with name & years of service on it instead of a gold watch or something useful. That met the business end of a ball peen hammer. Trying to erase this place as best I can from my memory. I shouldn't even visit here, but still have some friends here, so curious how things are for them, is all.
Used to at least say I worked for a top 5 bank.
Now it's just a "really big bank"
Though it looks like that one's going to be inaccurate, as well, soon.
I used to say Wells Fargo, proudly. Now I just say A major bank. I'm really ashamed of what the company allowed to happen, and I'm ashamed of how the bank is handling its downsizing. It feels sociopathic.
I'm uncomfortable when people ask me who I work for.
My answer is usually something like "I work for one of the banks".
If pressed, I'll add something like "I do tech stuff for one of the banks - we'll leave it at that".
I'd rather not admit that I work for Wells Fargo, and I'm not proud of it.
I am getting asked this in interviews. No one can convince me WF has turned the image problem corner. The best part is when I get to explained why I'm leaving. How WF is JP Morgan lite in ending full time WFH because managers are so paranoid they need to have an eye of their employees 3 days a week. And yet they keep pushing RTO back while reminding us between sips of coffee that our full time WFH gigs are going away, at some point, soon, for the last 2.5 years. I cannot move up in my career unless I relocate to one of their filthy, violent hub offices. Interviews are going great. I have many lined up and I just started applying so get yourselves out there. Our co-worker got 3 job offers in one week with at or higher salary. For those that do not want to get the CovVac at this time note that your termination may not include severance if Biden the Bozo wins that fight b4 relocation is enforced
I don't even say I'm in 'banking' or 'financials' nowadays.

Trust me, people who don't work here aren't obsessed with the scandals.
I get it. They are embarrassing. They always have been though. They are so substandard.
But i joined after the scandal to help solve the issues that caused it
