Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I'm tired of my job being this stressful all the time

I've been here for two years and I've been constantly stressed out in that time. There's too much work and not enough time to do it, my boss tends to give me tasks that have nothing to do with my job, layoffs are always a possibility and being relatively new I know I'm at higher risk than most... Does it ever get better?

I like this point:

once you realize that you get paid the same (no raises!) whether or not you do a great job or a bad job then you can relax. if you work from home then take online classes.

Everyone take it easy, that's what the management does. They don't do anything besides manipulate people for fun. They'd leave if they could find a job.

I spoke to a counselor after I left Oracle. Apparently, Oracle is considered number one by that community in creating severe trauma in employees.

You should get out. There is no reason to work at Oracle, it is all a waste of your time.

  1. you are in no danger of being laid off; too many people walking out the door voluntarily. layoffs cost the company money up front, better to treat employees badly until they quit on their own.
  2. once you realize that you get paid the same (no raises!) whether or not you do a great job or a bad job then you can relax. if you work from home then take online classes.
  3. This job is as stressful as you allow it to be. Do things on your own timeline. What are they going to do? give you a bad review and not give you a raise? lol.

Be aware of chronic low stress, it will give you that, and not good for your health. I have never been employed by a company where so many people have serious health issues and some do the unthinkable, it’s very sad and demoralising.

Does it ever get better?

No, it only gets worse! You will grow older, much older before you will see a raise. You will be asked to take on roles that you are not trained for. When your friends leave, you will have to do their work as a good bye present.

Abandon all hope he who enter here.

Last poster is 100000% on point. I moved into a new role recently. Similar but higher ARR customers. It literally is just an adult version of babysitting and I spotted it a mile away. I feel sorry for those that are stuck but believe I have so much more to give so I have interviews next week. Oracle is and will always been a terrible place to be. I heard more people went to Amazon’s career day from Oracle than Amazon. It’s over for Oracle. I followed all the mgmt “leaders”. Just keep getting paid.

You are not at risk, in fact it may be the opposite. I left oracle after many years at oracle, of constant stress and work without a break for training and other self development which I wanted to do. The problem with oracle (and maybe with alot of other companies) is there is a lot of people that are not good at their jobs and the one or two that are good tend to be under the pump because managers rely on them for everything, I was unfortunately in that group. What you need to realise is that oracle will not change, only you can make that change, I tried and pleaded for change and it took many quarters and years for anything to give but it was too late. Oracle is like “survivor” the tv show, the only people that win are those that float in the middle, high performers stay in their positions because they are good at what they do but need up doing more work than everyone else in their team and are constantly stressed and end up leaving when they realise it’s going nowhere, the weakest either leave or just stay where they are and make everyone else in the team suffer, and those people in the middle that just float around who aren’t bad but not good either become VP’s, because they are good at maintaining a spreadsheet and telling everyone else what they should be doing which they obviously can’t do themselves. They end up the winners, if there is a winner (or some sort of happiness) in all of this.

Also oracle don’t care about you if you leave, they have the attitude they will just hire someone else and someone else will knock on the door. I remember a director in my early days said it once in an all hands call and I was shocked, he may not have represented oracle well in that moment but the mindset was there.

By the way, I have left and very happy, I only visit this page to validate I have made the right decision. There will be a day that I will forget oracle and move on.

This is the really important key to understanding what's going on:

my boss tends to give me tasks that have nothing to do with my job

The managers I was working for have their reports working on things for other groups. They trade favors this way. If some manager will do something for them, like lie or attack someone they don't like, then they have one of their reports do something for that manager's suckup. Suckup then takes credit for it and the management above is too unbelievably stupid to understand that the suckup is actually not doing anything at all. They can work you to death this way.

The key to all the corruption is that manager's are not allowed to speak directly to their manager's reports. That's the key. No visibility means they can lie like there's no tomorrow. They have complete control over their reports that way and a lot of employees are also isolated by the manager to make sure that they can't talk about what they are working on with anyone else.

One manager suggested someone work from home for a while, while he lied about them behind their back and said they were taking a break. All the while giving the credit for what they did to the manager's suckup.

This is rampant. Lots of really incompetent people all over the company. They suckup to the manager to avoid having to do any work, which would show how incompetent they are. Then a handful of people work massively overtime. They think they are working for their own credit, but really they are just supporting the massive weight of incompetent people. Doing their work for them without even knowing that's what they are doing.

Everyone needs to get out. The corruption is beyond anything you could ever imagine. It will implode at some point.

You need to get out. Your manager is running you ragged, probably while other people are being given credit for your work. Read the lawsuit for Maynard-Kuran posted on here. Guy from AWS worked to death and then ki---d himself.

You need to get out. Get out, get out, get out!

It’s tough to feel sorry for someone who joined 2 years ago when the company has so obviously been in trouble for much longer than that, the management is so notoriously bad, and layoffs have been a constant for so long.

What, did you not do your homework before interviewing and then joining? That you seem surprised by what a POS oracle is does not speak well for your professional and industry knowledge.

My advice to you: suck it up, deal with the fact that you made a mistake and get the he-l out. You’re already wasting time.

Instead of complaining about it here, why not spend your time and energy finding another job somewhere else? Or, are you in over your head?
