I agree you cannot label and entire generation. Just like any other stereotype, that is just simply not a fair thought. What can be said is that a high percentage of Millennials have entered the work force over the last several years and we have seen a dramatic shift in work ethic and expectations. A high percentage of Millennials appear to expect high pay for little to no work and to not have to pay for things that every prior American has had to pay for. We are a country in decline on many levels and yes we have a younger generation pushing us faster and faster in that direction.
Are there actually people here complaining about things they've done to give their children a better life than they had?

Gen X births started in about 1965. Their defining characteristic was time off, self absorption, traveling the world on doting parents’ dime and ,eaving the nest in their mid 30s instead of early 20’s.
I can assure you that your parents have given up, and, after giving up so much for you, are going to finally spend on themselves and by that I mean All of it.
Gen X has never learned to get out of bed and get a job. Are you saying that as your elders die off you will live off of our work?
Surprise…. We sent you to school so you would be free and debt free. And we now realize that we should have made you save, borrow and bear some risk.

Gosh, since every generation says the new generation is so bad, it's a wonder we're not all back living in caves!
I'm an old guy, and when someone says gen-X-Y-millenials or whatever are lazy or entitled it let's me know that person isn't very bright and I can ignore them.
Because it tells me they have no self-awareness.
Every generation brings its baggage.
That said, I would apprecaite it if you stayed off my lawn. :-)

Yeah, but that artificially results in a "gen X problem" when it's obvious that boomers face the same challenges. Safe to say that this isn't a generational thing so much as a basic ageism thing.

Poorly written headline. Says it's all about gen X, but then all the survey data etc is about 'workers 45 and older', which obviously includes a bunch of boomers.
@gjb, This is comforting to hear. I’m a 50+ Gen-Xer with a bachelor’s, one industry certification, and another certification in progress. I no longer worry about being laid off, especially as I hear that some hiring managers are actually avoiding millennials due to the entitlement mentality that seems to run rampant among them. Eventually millennials will be the only option as more Gen-Xers retire, but in the meantime, we’re still valuable resources when a traditional work ethic is high on the wish list for employers.
All of the data in the underlying study references 45+ as a single age bracket, so why CNBC chose to position this as Gen X is an odd. It would include the very youngest Gen X, all of the Boomers, the Silents etc.
I’m Gen X. I hold an advanced degree, two field relevant certifications and was contacted by 5 of 7 companies that received my resume. It took me less than a month to find a new, better job.
Ha. This is amusing. The fact is, this generation has the worst work ethic, drive, self-starting mentality, and a constant need for participation trophies. Anyone with real drive is laughing their kiester off at any notion these kids are going to be actual replacements.
Did the OP and the posters actually read the article? It specifically spoke about unemployment for entry- and intermediate-level 45-60 year olds. Keeping a job during this period has always been hard. It just has gotten worse in the last 6 years. The article mentioned how assistance to retrain can help.
