Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

What’s the deal here?

Our team always had pretty much the same number of people, and lately, our manager often mentioned that there is a possibility of reducing the headcount. I always thought that that was an empty threat made for the purpose of making us work harder even though we were giving our 110%.
Just last week three news people were hired. Younger people. Our manager all of us sudden
Changed his rhetoric and is now saying that we need more people. Are we really training our replacements?

Chase is already at 79% and shooting for 80 so I believe it.

Is your manager new-school, aka the type to make you train your replacements while hiding it from you?

Or is your manager old-school, building a large enough kingdom to think they can avoid being downsized?

Sure there's plenty of the first type of manager here, but IME the second type of manager is much more prevalent. If it's #2 that's some outdated thinking in this company, but they still operate on that belief since it's what they've always known. My manager is suffering from that mentality.
