Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Internal transfer blocked ?

I had a final round interview internally that I was a shoe in for. The hiring manager basically said as much during the interview. The group is obviously different than my current one, but would work closely with. 2 members of my current team have recently resigned.. I told my current manager that I was interviewing as the company requires and he tries extremely hard to keep me on. Nonetheless I didn’t get the position - is there a chance my current manager spoke with the hiring manager and Blocked me? Has anyone seen this happen before ?

Not retain, they are obviously looking to move so its an effort to get them out of the bank, rather than pass the buck to someone else.

Do it all the time, especially the low performers.

Blocking transfers and promotions is common in all businesses and companies. Wells Fargo is in the rule and not the exception. If you truly want to get ahead consider looking outside.

There’s a group actively doing this right now because they’ve had a lot of attrition. So yes, it’s likely.

I am a manger with an excellent track record of building teams and suddenly half of my team went to similar positions in the same ballpark area. All got better roles too. Am I upset ? Yes , you betcha. Did I stop the transfers: no, not an option. Did my manager reward me for building an excellent team ? No, absolutely not. In fact, despite the general talk of us encouraging mobility, there is the general annoyance that I could not hold on to my people. And then this: one of the girls now wants to return to me. I am in no position to bring her back either . To the OP: please do not believe that your manager stopped your transfer. The poor manager probably has no control over the situation. All you should now assume is that your manager now knows you are a flight risk. And will need to keep an eye on you.

I was recommended for promotion twice by my manager and upper management blocked it. I finally got out of that mess because I was already doing the higher level job all that time. I decided that them taking advantage of me was going to end.

They like to have good talent who did higher level work but don’t want to pay for it. This management is all about being cheap and not about the “employee” at all.

This happens all the time even tho it shouldn’t. I use to work in financial reporting for Credit Administration. After a couple years, I got bored and wanted a more challenging position. Everyone in my group was younger so it would have been a long wait to get promoted. So I applied for a position in commercial banking and thought I had the job. However, when my hiring manager talked to current manager, she made it clear that there was no way she’d let me transfer. She even called the EVP of my group who put a stop to my transfer. I ended up getting a position outside of Wells. Good luck. It’s not easy but getting away from managers like this is worth it.

I knew someone in HR who was blocked from an internal transfer to another opening within HR. It went up several levels because her boss didn’t want her to leave. She had proof that all of this happened. You’ll either need to find a hiring manager who is willing to fight for you or look externally.

Had it happen to me at another bank. My internal manager found out that was looking for another position and he blocked me. I saw the two of them talking and next thing I knew, my interview was abruptly cancelled. Needless to say I knew that I had to leave that place, which I did.

I have known folks who said they got blocked but it was speculation. They didn't have proof. I feel blocked as I have interviewed for internal positions and can't get hired in another department. In my case, it could be blocking or it could be that I legit didn't get the job. I know that I will probably never get promoted in my current role. I was directly told to try elsewhere if I want to advance. So, it's possible they aren't approving any transfers for me.

Where does it say in the employee handbook that we have to inform our manager we are applying for or interviewing for other internal positions if you have been in your current role more that 12 months? I have applied for interviewed for and been offered and accepted internal positions and my manager wasn’t informed until I accepted.

I've applied for dozens of roles and did not get selected, most of which I as very qualified for. It took me about 4 different interviews before I got an offer internally. It's harder to get a job within WF than it is externally, true story! These internal recruiters treat us like shi!. Put JPM Chase on your resume and they'll move you to front of the stack of resumes! I'd also suggest putting that you're head of a DEI Council or a chapter leader of BLM, that will also help you get bumped ahead!

It’s a bad move for a manager or senior leader to do it, and is infrequent from what I’ve seen, but it can happen. I’ve heard of 2 instances in my larger org in the past 4 years.

Managers can block for sure.

There is a provision for retaining talent in critical roles, yes. I couldnt guess if that applies to your situation though.

My guess is that it is rarely invoked, so it may have come down to a diversity hire thing imposed by HR in the new hiring guidelines

interviewing managers often say things that candidates interpret as "you've got the job", when they are just being positive and encouraging. you don't know what he said to other people. This is true at WF and it's true anywhere else you will interview.

Managers can't "block" people from moving.

You can email the hiring manager and ask for feedback on why you didn't move forward. Don't do it in a challenging, demanding or whiny way... express thanks/gratitude for the opportunity to connect , that you are interested in the area should something arise in the future, and ask if there's anything you can do to be considered a stronger candidate in the future.

Being a “shoe in” and being the best qualified can be entirely different. I had an employee interviewing for another department. The hiring manager asked me about work ethic, and transferable skills and needless to say, she didn’t get the job.
