Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Advice from a former VZW employee…

I keep watching these boards to see how, if anything has changed since I was laid off a few years back. As a current unionized AT&T employee, I can say without any hesitation that VZW reps NEED a union.

I used to think it was goofy, and unnecessary, but now 3 years in I think differently. The whole thing actually does help the rep who would otherwise be getting screwed by corporate. Sure, you don’t have any real control over quotas, and sure there are the BS side by sides and passive aggressive coachings from managers who are more concerned with looking good on zoom meetings and metrics charts than running a functional business…BUT…

Everyone comes to work every day knowing what the union rules are, and how far things can go. The union rules dictate everything, meaning you never have to guess what this policy or that policy is, and nobody can/will come after you for exploiting the rules to your benefit because everyone knows the company does the same thing themselves, which (shocker) is common for negotiated terms. “Look out for number 1” is the expected approach.

Also, everything is much more stable. Nothing is decided by favorites. It’s all dictated by seniority and ironclad rules.
Sure, there is a ton of BS at AT&T just like there is at Verizon but, when the layoffs come calling at AT&T, they are REQUIRED to offer you another position, unlike VZWs latest dump which was “you can apply, but you’re on your own.”

And the commission structure is better, thanks to the Union. We get paid based on product, not percentages. Everything counts for something. In real dollars. Surveys don’t impact your pay.

I’m not saying jump ship to AT&T, not really, but I am saying that if you all were to UNIONIZE, and even get half the structure we have at AT&T, you all will be MUCH happier, secure, and probably make more money.

And it will ruin KB and Hans’ year, so there is that too :)

Former AT&T rep here. The OP isn’t lying. I didn’t take an open job at a store 45 minutes away when mine was closed, and instead hopped to Verizon right before (as in a month before) the COVID shutdown. I’ll be looking to go back once my wife is done with college at the end of the year.

It is true that they don’t necessarily offer you a job close to where you live if your store is closed, and it is true you have to make that decision rather quick, but the difference between quality of life at Verizon and AT&T is dramatic for all the reasons the OP said.

I’ll also add that a nice thing we had there that Verizon doesn’t is the auto approved short notice days off. Let’s say you wake up today and want to take tomorrow off. You go into a website and say you are taking tomorrow off. As long as you have vacation time and enough people are scheduled (minimum of 5 hours it’s your absence), you are approved to be gone. The manager doesn’t have to be asked, and can’t deny your request. That was a nice perk I wish I still had.

The other thing I miss, and I didn’t even know it would be a thing, was the ability to stand up for yourself. Maybe it wasn’t a union thing, but I’m guessing it had something to do with it, but at AT&T if a customer started to get abrasive, you could shut that down right there. No expectation to be abused by the customer at all. No sitting there and taking it in fear of a bad survey. You could literally say “you aren’t going to treat me like that, and if you continue you will have to go.” Unlike at Verizon where I for no good reason am yelled at, threatened, cursed at, and am expected to be a robot and help the person because that survey can/will cost me money. In the year I’ve been here (not counting shut down time) I haven’t seen either of my managers even attempt to stop an abusive customer, let alone ask them to leave. That simply doesn’t go that way at AT&T.

@1mwf+1bU6MnbC You can find it hard to believe but in my case very true. I have worked for three Fortune 500 companies in the last 25 years. Not only do I still visit these boards from time to time but also several other companies that I own shares in. For anyone to believe that only current employees visit this site is very naive.

I find it really hard to believe you. The only reason anyone looks at this site is because they are still employed with Verizon and trying to find out when the rug is gonna be pulled out from under them. Hence Layoff site. Nobody in there right mind that is no longer with a company is going to keep coming to that companies layoff board years after they were let go. You either have a sc--w loose or you are a union troll pretending to be an ex employee.

But in reality.... Your store closes in NYC and they say we got an opening for you in Des Moines. Take it or leave it and decide in 24 hours. Job security!!!!!!

OP isn’t lying at all. It’s literally in the union bargaining agreement that any surplus employees created by a location closure must be offered the equal or better position elsewhere without an interview. Anyone who actually works at Verizon needs to stop and ask “why does the company say unions are bad?” The quarterly anti-union rhetoric that has to be spewed to the front line is nothing but baseless threats and allegations.

“A union can’t protect your job”
Actually, yes at AT&T it does.

“A union can’t guarantee you more money.”
Technically no, but at AT&T employees don’t lose money due to surveys, and aren’t paid a zero sum for upgrades. Every sale has a dollar value attached to it, and isn’t just a % to an arbitrary “sales bucket”

“Union dues are expensive.”
Like, $80/month. A worthwhile trade off for actually getting paid commission.

“The union wouldn’t be able to guarantee you get pay raises.”
Actually, the union agreement with AT&T is why employees get a raise every 5 months regardless of their metrics. Think about it, would you rather get a 4.3% bump every 6 months, or have a district manager, looking exclusively at your results, decide if you get 1-3% annually?

“Unions can’t get you all opening shifts and no Sundays.”
Well, technically not, but if you are high enough in seniority in the store, you will be in full control of your schedule. Only the ones at the lowest seniority have to plug in the gaps.

And as a bonus, you MUST be notified in writing a minimum of 48 hours before any schedule change. And, if you want to trade shifts with someone, you don’t have to ask permission, you just do it.

Verizon spends a LOT of time and effort to keep the CWA out of their stores. Don’t let them lie to you about what the union won’t do when any AT&T rep can confirm the union DID do it.

A Union won’t make the stupid credit card or worthless insurance go away, but it will dramatically improve the quality of life of the VZW rep.

So you actually work for the union. You must be the organizer who keeps getting posts deleted for soliciting and spamming this site. Now you just lie. Gross

Hmm, AT&T has closed more stores over the past 12 months than Verizon. Nothing but misery on the AT&T layoff page. Union has done jack squat except collect dues. OP is a liar and a shill.
