Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Is it true that the manager has no say on who is laid off?

I heard that based on instructions from higher management , HR decides on positions that will be eliminated and my immediate many has no say on it ?
So this means performance ratings do not matter?

Raise your hand, get displaced. Simple as that.

Most of it is tenure and ratings, most groups mgmt has zero input

But frankly, it’s a good way to clean house on 1 and 2 level performers

Wrong. What you describe may be common, but it's not universal. Me thinks you need some qualifiers.

Managers were given a DEI quota to meet and after that asked to eliminate the highest salaries, problem child’s, and if a tie white male loses.

Performance ratings don't matter in lay offs?
Then why mid year reviews?

I know people that were “consistently exceeds” and laid off. Spans and layers a and they were too expensive.

There a have been a few people laid off in my group, and that included a mgr that I was very good friends with. He was let go two months after my peers. I asked him if he had any decision on laying off my peers, nope, no reason to lie to me. Now, I'm guessing the employees that are a very high level hr wise, their mgrs. have a say in it.

It depends. There's a big difference between a group consisting of 100 phone bank operators, versus a small group of highly specialized mega-dollar guru's.

The manager of the "100 phone bank operators" probably doesn't have any input in the matter. But the manager of the specialized team will have more say.

In my groups case, we were instructed to have our "saves" defined several months ago. So while we are not able to pick exactly WHO gets cut, we do have the ability to say who does NOT get cut.

I am a manager and just had to displace several people, I had absolutely no involvement in the decision on who was let go. We now don't have enough people to do the work. this company is disgusting.

In my former area, any QA with that title (who wasn’t reclassified as a software developer) got laid off. No exceptions.

Now developers are complaining they have to test and write test cases for traceability. Guess who will be looking for jobs elsewhere?

But do the execs with a golden parachute when they leave within the year care? Nope, they will just cash out like at their previous jobs and leave the mess to the actual workforce that is left to deal with. Then they’ll move on to the next bank they want to sc--w up and make money on.

Manages have input on who is displaced. It can vary based on scope of the displacement and whether or not complete or partial impacts to department. But they are always involved as HR has specific paperwork required to be completed by managers reflecting feedback on performance, etc.

I didn't take a lot of days off. In fact, I only took the vacation days that I was supposed to. My performance review was meets expectations and I was laid off.

Not sure how it works here but at my last company, h/r told me my manager fought hard to keep me on but it was determined that my position was eliminated. Maybe different here.

My manager told the people who got let go he had nothing to do with it. Then after they were gone he bragged about how he cleaned out the people who didn’t “fit in”. (Kiss his rear).

It really depends on the circumstances. They might have a lot of say, and they might have zero say. I've never had any input. I mean absolutely none. But I know others that have been able to displace their worst performers.

My boss said the same thing. But funny, the people who were layed off were ones who took FULL advantage of days off and then somehow seemed to have an extra EMERGENCY day off or two or three or more. I am so glad they are gone. They were true deadweights who left others to do their work. But referring to the denial by my boss that it was others who decided, I am not sure. But it may have been. As I said, who has access to people who take more than their share of days off, HR, that's who.

It's potential they could have some say! In Q1 in our group, our manager told us she had to lay off one at direction of the business and ended up picking a low performer to lay off. Then informed our team. However, that may have been a white lie to us to avoid her looking bad, blaming it on that she was told she had to cut 1. Who knows!?

This place is a Shi! Show!

We are team of 12 QA analysts who moved under dev team after reorg in Nov 2020
So this means that manager does not get to keep few of us based on Automation testing skills?
