How many call centers do we still have in the US? Are those that are still here slated to be closed and relocated to India or whichever country is currently considered the best cost saver? Is there a point in applying for an open call center position or is that just basically going to end up being a temporary job? A friend's kid asked me for advice, and I'm not sure what to tell him.

Wells Fargo, along with JP Morgan, operate large call centers and back office in the Philippines. India is primarily IT and other non-customer contact positions.
Philippines is preferred for call centers given that the majority of the country speaks English since it was under US control until independence and there was a very large US military presence until the early 1990’s.
There are literally millions of call center workers in the Philippines and it is a highly prized job to support their families.
Call center jobs are not glamorous but as the precious person posted, they offer a lot of exposure to the company. It’s also a very difficult job. The pay is decent for entry level. It’s a safe stepping stone and a great way to get your foot in the door of a large company.
I have been working a project to transition call centers overseas. It is far faster of a process than i anticipated and lots of info is kept from me but from what i can tell, it isnt going to shut down all centers. some aspects of the call center cannot be sent overseas. So, what Im getting at is ppl who are ones and twos and do simple functions will be moved, promoted or laid off later. I dont think a young kid would have a hard time bouncing back from having a yr of cc experience. don’t discourage him bc he will learn a lot. its one of the few areas where u learn a little about several aspects of the enterprise. just explain what u know and that its a stepping stone or experience he will always have and can build on. the pay is decent for an 18(ish) year old, too. assuming he’s right out of school.
Does the kid have experience? If not, take the job and get resume filler.
Tell him that you don’t know, since you don’t and would be passing on “information” from a very biased anonymous website. Outline your concerns for sure, but anything gleaned from this place should be taken with a grain of salt.
