I know that the threat of layoffs is real and more present than ever. I also know that there are a lot of younger people who took up mortgages, took college loans for their kids, car loans, and whatnot. I am in my 50–es, been with the company for 27 years, and I made a good living for myself. I see a lot of people in a similar position as I am spending every day in fear that they will be cut. I chose not to be afraid. I worked hard, always inverted in my education, kept my skills current. I still have a lot to give and I figure that if a layoff does come for me there has to be a place where I would be still wanted. There is life outside WF. After all, off those years of hard work and sacrifices, I think I at least have the “luxury” to come to work without fear and stress.

Good luck getting to your 50s with 27 years of any experience, I think that you might find it quite a bit harder to get there without helicopter benefactors in the last decade or two.
Exactly! There is life outside of WF. Its not the only bank or working place. Some people are just very closed minded.

There are people who go out to end of the trailer park and scream at hurricanes too. There seem to be less of them each year though.
I would leave any banking jobs, Warren Buffet dumping all the banking stocks, as we are on verge of democrats moving towards great depression. Money isnt free, and they are driving up costs and causing huge issues in the economy. They have no clue what they are doing.
Outside of that, good time to move into these industries: pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and there are some others that will be more secure than banking jobs. Plus its their nature to over hire then do mass layoffs in these large banks, good time to get out for sure.

Work in your 50's coming off of steady employment often entails contract work. Not the 401K employee status gigs worth landing. It is much worse if you're not a protected status job seeker. That said, not only is it important to keep in good with the internal staff, but the outside contacts can become a life saver some day as well.

Lot of Wells employees have never worked anywhere else. Wells is all they know. They are not confident that they would survive elsewhere nor desire to go elsewhere. It’s like being comfortable living at home with your parents and hoping they never have to move out. Now the fear of facing laying off is real. It’s unfortunate but no gain no pain. Can’t rely on anyone nor any job to “take care” of you forever. The grave train stops here
