What doesn’t make sense is no we built such a bloated workforce in the first place. Middle Management bloat is THE issue. Provides nothing but cost.

This doesn't make any sense. There are too many people to only have 3 layers of management with 10+ directs.

I've seen examples recently teams getting exceptions to hire in director level for individual contributor roles. That's going to going over great with spans/layers. How that even got approved I have no clue,

@klv

Having “manager” In your title does not mean they have to be a people manager and are therefore at risk of being cut. Tons of departments have “managers” that are not intended to have direct reports.

our manager has about 30/35 workers, but have only spoken to them one time; pretty useless. When I did talk to them, they couldnt even communicate in the domain I work in. From that point on, i just never reached them or spoke to them, found them useless

Look at Marketing group absolutely everyone has title of Marketing program manager with not 1 direct report under them and not a one has been laid off. Move to that group you’ll be safe.

yea this will save money, why do you feel you need a manager? At this point in your career you should be mostly self sufficient, only go to manager for serious issues

My manager already ignores 40, many of which was inherited after other managers cut loose.

@jfk you're probably right. Timeline makes more sense, but it'll still be a dumpster fire.

This is the goal for 2022, not necessarily 2021. Groups will start posturing and preparing themselves for the transition this year tho. Cuts will be tough and yes the transition will have impacts which is why they are spreading it out. Lots of business lines are not even at the seven mark and those teams will experience pain this year when they get forced.

There's no way to do this in my LOB without eliminating the useful experience/knowledge. Could you do it? Sure. Would it **** the LOB for many years to come? Yes. All the managers up and down the chain have more than 7, but less than 10, so you'd have a cascading impact all up and down the chain. The company is free to do it, of course, but it will cost them more in the long run than it will save today.

@knt tell me more about how you've never been a manager. I've done both, for many years at WF, and I work much harder as a manager than I did as an IC. Frankly being an IC was easy by comparison. If the OP is correct, I'll likely lose my job as I don't have 10 reports at this time. It is what it is, I'll find another job.

That way, more directs will get less time as they are spread across fewer managers. My manager can't even handle 7 let alone 10. This will be good for everyone, lol, including morale and relationships. WTFE.
