Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I don't get it

I'm astounded at what some of the employees are willing to take to keep their job. I've seen older employees yelled at and humiliated by younger managers and all they do is keep their mouths shut. And this happens repeatedly. I nearly intervened once but then I realized it's really no skin off my back. If they don't mind, why would I? Still, why in the world would you let something like that happen?

Do not go to HR folks, I reported an abusive hostile manager once and they treated me like the offender instead of her, they protect the corporation

I worked for Bell Atlantic/Verizon for 29 years and I stood up to every would be dictator which was every damn manager except for one ! Had raises and bonuses taken from me on 5 different occasions and kept my job because I was the best damn engineer in the state ! The last time my director told me to keep my mouth shut because he accused me of threatening a lawyer who lied about a transmission line he compromised backfilling and creating clearance issues !
The conversation between me and the lawyer was overheard by two of my fellow employees in the office . They wrote affidavits and swore under oath no such language was used on my part . I received bench warrants to appear in front of a judge ! I walked into my managers office and told him to get me company legal counsel against this fraudulent charge ! Two weeks went by and nobody with legal contacted me . I again walked into his office and this time I told him to get me legal counsel or two things would happen ! I sue the lawyer for defamation of character and Verizon for not representing me as an employee falsely accused. The lawyer was forced to drop the charges he filed with the FCC against me . That's the last time I had anyone ever give me sh–t in the company ! I filed my pension paperwork online and several months later I called my manager from my driveway and told him it was my last day . This is why Verizon is probably the worst run company in the country ! They sew the seeds of division between men and women by promoting incompetent men and women to manage good hard working employees and practice reverse racism and have for 40 years ! They are a cess pool of
incompetent pathetic narcissists !

Corporations ONLY care about the bottom line and MAKING MONEY.

Employees are just a COG that contribute to it and ONLY a few truly
benefit from it.

If some young Whipper Snapper manager started yelling at me, Id take him outside for lunch and feed him a Knuckle Sandwich.

Don’t get mad and document everything paper is your friend.

If you threaten you get pulled – it’s why people get pushed so to remove them from the discussion.

Just laugh it’s the best medicine

And as Harvey levin said don’t get mad take them to court.

What are you talking about @2pmc+1algp53s, if you want to talk about real survival go back into the woods, all real survival takes is breathing air and being able to get food. Its not too difficult, I am not sure which government you are referring to, do you think human beings are going to stand against the forces of nature. Are you delusional to think that the comfort life of America is how real life works in the wild?

If they like to yell have at. It isn’t going to provoke a response from me because I’ll be the one fired for yelling or go to jail if as someone suggested hitting someone. This isn’t the roaring 20s where you can pop someone and get on with life it is 2020 where you pop someone and you might just have to pick out a comfy cardboard box under a bridge or which bunk you want. .

What do you consider white collar jobs, how are they different from blue collar?

OP: what is the background and setting, are you referencing white collar jobs, union jobs, desk jobs within IT? Please level the expectations so folks can learn and respond accordingly.

For some people a job does not define them. They smile, collect the good salary and benefits and enjoy their live with the means it provides. Nothing more, nothing less.

So, if everyone in the middle class and lower quits their jobs and stops buying stuff, how do you foresee these hundreds of millions of children, women and men surviving? Are you expecting the government (i.e. remaining tax payers) to provide them with income to live on? Are you expecting corporate taxes to significantly increase to support these non-working people? Certainly you realize that once taxes reach the point that the companies no longer make a profit they will shut down. When they shut down there will be even less funding for the government and pretty much an economic failure of the country.

Treating people with disrespect and lack of love is never acceptable. To the capitalist responders in this thread you need to take some time to go educate yourself. You aren’t as intelligent as you think you are. In fact, you’re the problem. You’re so mind f’d that you can’t think for yourself anymore and that is truly stupidity. Ignorance and egos often go hand n hand, and often involve capitalism. Not all capitalism is bad, but it’s the ignorant stupidity of mankind behind it that makes it bad. Stop defending capitalism and these corporations that take advantage of the every day average person. Just because you study some books and might get a degree, that doesn’t make you intelligent. It makes you knowledgeable about that field of life, but again it doesn’t make you intelligent. Allowing yourself to be manipulated by corporations and their elite rich share holders only shows how much you don’t know about life. And that is truly sad and heartbreaking in its own. Every American in the middle class and lower income needs to quit their jobs and stop buying s–t. We need to fight back! These corporations only survive because of us. If we all start marching imagine the change for all races in America. Just imagine how incredible and loving this world could be.

Your decency, empathy, and wisdom are a refreshing addition to this board.
@fsw+1algp53s
Your premise exhibits not only your meanness, and delusional union-hatred, but also your failure to understand the world around you.
What “entitlements” do you speak of?
Virtually ALL retirees take the pension as a cash buyout, along with their 401k, and transition to Medicare at 65, so what are you ignorantly spouting off about k-d?
Also, cite your supposed “statistics”. Sounds more like you like to make things up to compensate for your smallness, and career shortsightedness.

It could be that the older worker is keeping records and biding their time for hostile work environment/ age discrimination lawsuit. Young manager fired, old worker hits jackpot and retires happily ever after.

If a young manager yelled at me , I would pop them in the mouth. Yelling at employees, young or old is unacceptable. They shouldn’t be managers if the only way they can manage is yell.

"This is why they are the most miserable people you will ever meet." I believe you are incorrect! According to this board, and the wireless board, Wireless employees are the are the most miserable people you will ever meet.

Union associates are shackled to Verizon for life with the promise of a pension and health care. So they endure decades of misery for this promise if they make it to retirement. Statistically, for these blue collar workers, life is short post retirement and Verizon is banking on this statistic so they can pocket the entitlements.

This is why they are the most miserable people you will ever meet.

Your opinion and thoughts does not matter. Only the person involved gets to make the choice of what they will and/or want take. You have no idea what is important in their life at that time. They may be:

  • Waiting to get another job
  • Trying to make it to retirement
  • Have major health issues in their family and need the benefits
  • Be in major debt and desperately need the money
  • Have no ambition and likes the status quo
  • May be a very introverted person and dislikes conflict
  • etc

You really never know what goes into another person's thought process.

No wants to hire older workers. You put up with it for a few years, get your 401k or pension where it needs to be and “so long suckers”. No one in their 50s or older wants to be out looking for work in 2021.
