Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Laid 3 senior service engineers from Middleware IT today (5.20.21) without notice

No notice, their last day was today. They apparently got a package but no one knows what it was. Vile company.

Standard layoff process today is to be told you’re being laid off, getting 60 days paid, no working notice and then severance of 8 weeks pay or 2 weeks pay for every year of service (max 52 weeks pay), whichever is greater. Sucks to be laid off, but it’s not a bad package, tbh. At minimum, you get notified of displacement and you get 60 days pay + 8 weeks, which is roughly 4 months of pay. I won’t defend how WF is doing the displacements or whether they’re picking the right people, but the execution is ok.

So, which of the three did you prefer?

For eight years I worked with a 50-ish Middleware person who was incredibly confrontational, but was the only person who worked on my application. She didn't document anything. Every time a question came up, she'd look at the code for the answer. I bet she would love to get her severance and leave Wells in the lurch. I think that was her plan all along.

They've opened themselves up to problems though. They are hiring to back fill some vacant positions (yes, US) but laid off people on the same team simultaneously, despite those individuals doing the same basic role.

The poster clearly meant that the notification / downsizing process was typical, which it is. How displacements are conducted frankly has nothing to do with any of the other things you mentioned. We didn't get the asset cap because we laid people off incorrectly.

@xip every other "typical company" that downsizes is under an asset cap for opening millions of unauthorized customer accounts to boost corporate profits and just changed CEO's after years of failing to fix the asset cap issues?

Yeah, "vile company" is a little misplaced -- "typical company" is more accurate. WF is no better and no worse than any other large company. Do not understand the comments that seem to imply WF is somehow special or exceptional -- and thus must be held to higher standards. Nope, WF is typical big company, eager to cut costs, maybe clueless, but relentless to look good in the short term.

If you were laid off yesterday 5/20, your 60 day WARN period expires 7/18. That's when your severance begins, if you signed and accepted it by the deadline. Sorry, "salary continuation plan" begins then, for however many weeks you are specifically entitled to based on completed years of service.

There is no such thing as laying off without notice, use your brain.

They did get notice, the notification period is just non-working. So they'll get paid for not working rather than working like zombies knowing they are going to lose their jobs. Believe me, I've seen a lot of these things, and your team got the much much better deal than those that have to work the notice period which, in spite of what some people say here, does still happen in certain LOBs.

The package details are chapter 16 of the benefits book. It's been said countless times.

No doubt they got the standard 60 days notice, non-working in their case. The company has to protect itself from sabotage. So some lucky people get shut down immediately. If you’re not lucky, you have to keep working for 30 or 60 days while knowing you’ve already been canned.

Why should everyone need to know about their package? They know.
