One of the nice things about Skype persistent chat is I can read the discussions that our EGS peers have when I log in the next day. Today I found out that our EGS partners are all getting corporate iPhones while US folks are having them taken away/phased out and we get BYOD.
How is this innovative corporate leadership from Chainsaw? How does that improve margins?
I'm pretty sure the VDI project means remote users would use their personal computers to connect to a Wells Fargo virtual machine using some kind of client software -- no software would be installed on remote machines other than that client. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
This is a much better scenario than than some are fearing; however, the idea of the company having access to my personal computer's camera and microphone -- as well as the possibility of my machine being confiscated due to some Wells Fargo legal matter -- gives me pause.
@1evt I recently had to turn my work cell in and honestly, the only calls I ever got on it were solicitors or scammers. I've worked from home for years and I had set up a landline strictly for work use so not really an issue until they decide not to reimburse the small change they do. My manager won't do the BYOD so she had our team set up on Jabr/Jabber. I rarely use it....actually tried to decline it since I am planning on retiring by end of year but nope, sent it anyway.
They can't make you participate in the VDI or WAVE project, those vdis are built with the minimum specs possible.
For those who got their Corp. device yanked from them, you could get an exception to keep them depending on why you need them and what projects you work on.
If you don't feel comfortable participating in the BYOD device program request Cisco Jabber on your machine, then you will be able to receive, make calls host meetings attend meetings all through your machine. You have to have them install in and assign you a phone number in order for it to work properly.
You can also request a headset that is compatible with your machine, cell phone and desk phone when we return to the office.

Yes, but they still have to live in India. In the top five of the world's wealthiest countries, living like a third world country. Less than 1% spent on healthcare. Using the same river for washing, drinking, sh!tting, and now dumping dead bodies.
I still have my corporate IPhone. I think they'll be hard-pressed until they come out with a solution for all android phones.
And I also think they'll have trouble navigating laws and what the firm should provide or cover part of the cell bill
correction/clarification re my post immediately below about Ca law. Employer can tell employees "BYOD or no corp phone" - however, Ca law requires if employee uses phone with BYOD, company must compensate for reasonable share of personal device usage. That is a nightmare in terms of determining share of cost, processing expense reimbursements, etc, and pretty much eats up any savings benefit.
re BYOD vs corp phone - if it was expense-driven purely decision there would be no corp phones... however, there are differences in laws that drive the decision not just expenses.
For example, Ca is exempt and WF continues to provide corp phones - they can't force a "BYOD or no phone" due to Ca state law.
In the US it's pretty much standard practice among competitors (no corp phone, use BYOD) and has been that way for a long time... so Wells was a lagger (surprise!).

They are all in with offshore and there is where they care to recruit by giving incentives. It’s all about being cheap. They’ll send as many jobs as they can there legally and/or getting government to look the other way while they slip bribes in their campaign coffers.
I have my corp iphone. If they want to reach me or have me call into a meeting they'll keep paying for it, otherwise i'll find a new company. They're already at the limits with no raising and medical thru the roof. They need to start increasing fees or rates on mortgages otherwise the brains are gone.
@1vje+1aXQBP3y. Correct. And on the VDI side, your specs also come from what your AU is budgeted for. There are different performance levels with the VDI, how many CPU cores, how much RAM your VDI gets. So if your AU gets a low budget for employee VDI chargebacks, you are going to get stuck with minimal specs on your VDI.
In that regard it isn't much different than with the laptop you are provided. The specs you get are based on how much your AU is budgeted. There are higher end systems available with fast CPUs, lots of RAM, and even dedicated GPUs. But again, what you get is based on the budget provided to the AU.
You can spec your own device to the best but it would also depend on how the VDI itself is scaled on WF side. I piloted a VDI not too long ago and it's quite slow. Enterprise IT tend to underspec everything. Just look at how slow splunk, jira, confluence pages load, lol.

As a former Wells employee, I never hear the end of how awful WF is. I also notice almost no one I know does anything about it. At a certain point either put up or shut up.

If you want to mess with them make that traffic go through something like NordVPN so they think you're galavanting across the globe while working. They want to give us 100% control of the hardware layer, take full advantage of that fact.

It all sounds good until you have to install software on your personal laptop to connect. Who knows what will be in the terms of service.
I've already noticed with my WFC provided laptop lately in the system tray that from time to time it turns on location services to track where I am at. This is new and has only been happening for the last month or so.
I'd actually prefer using my own hardware, at least I could control it and have decent specs.
I'm guessing the execs don't trust devices employees commonly use overseas (knockoffs like iFone etc.) to keep company info safe, but who knows.
@coc honestly could care less about that. Wells would never buy a computer anywhere close to the specs my home PC is. Plus being able to minimize the window rather than have to use a clunky hardware switch or multiple cables going to my monitor/clogging up my desk is a bonus imo.
Being treated like a second-class employee is where I have an issue. I've given this company decades of hard work and personal time, nobody in EGS has put in that much effort for WF. What thanks have I been given? A couple acrylic paperweights, some lapel pins, and a pen or two.
Actively trying to get away from here, but until I have an offer I will do the bare minimum to remain employed and wait to collect a package.
Just wait until the VDI project is done and they take away your corporate laptop too. You'll be using your own PC/laptop to work.
