India's parasitic outsourcing industry buckles under strain of covid disaster

Ftfa - notice no option of shifting work back to usa....

A Wells Fargo employee said some work is getting transferred to the Philippines, where staff is working overnight shifts to pick up the slack. The San Francisco based bank employs about 35,000 workers in India to help process car, home and personal loans, make collections, and assist customers who need to open, update or close their bank accounts.

Nasscom (https://nearshoreamericas.com/nasscom-spends-us510000-lobbying-government/) the key lobby group for India's $194 billion outsourcing industry and its almost 5 million employees, has downplayed the threat to operations. But Mishra and fellow analysts at Gartner say they're fielding a daily flood of calls from anxious global clients asking about the Covid-19 situation.

India's total coronavirus infections have risen to 21.5 million, of which about a third were added since mid-April. The state of Karnataka, whose capital is Bangalore, reported almost 50,000 new infections for a second straight day, with 30% of all results throwing up a positive result.

Experts have warned the crisis has the potential to worsen in the coming weeks, with predicting as many as 1,018,879 deaths by the end of July quadrupling from the current wave.

Before the pandemic, this cluster of glass-and-steel towers housed thousands of employees at firms like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and UBS Group AG who played critical roles in everything from risk management to customer service and compliance.

Now the buildings are eerily empty. And with case counts soaring across Bangalore and much of India, work from-home arrangements that have sustained Wall Street's back-office operations for months are coming under intense strain. A growing number of employees are either sick or scrambling to find critical medical supplies such as oxygen for relatives or friends.

Again, reading is a skill. It does not say India is parasitic, just their outsourcing industry.

You seem to be determined to say people are trashing Indian people here when they are criticizing outsourcing. Have an agenda, do we?

India is not parasitic. My advice to you, @OP+1aMWSybB, Is to examine your personal prejudices as you shave and look into your mirror in the morning.

It’s High Time to do some soul searching on your personal prejudices.

This is very informative.

I didn't know they got paid around $20,000 per year and get free training.

Its sad what is happening over there, yet seeing management freak out from the inside when entire India teams just disappear and project timelines slip off into the abyss is strangely satisfying.

Thank you for posting @OP.

So your plan is to deposit your money with the Federal Reserve which does in fact have operation in India - quite the plan. Let us know how that works out 🙄

@zig. Interesting that other countries have cheap education but some people are blocking efforts to do the same here. Then they allow the offshoring of American jobs. Maybe they have a stake in the game? After all, insider trading in legal for members of Congress.

The whole upskilling shtick is a myth, it always has been. Often times, these folks are not as skilled as we are led to believe, that’s why you are several standing around a desk here showing someone how to do something.

It’s about cheap labor, pure and simple. From slaves to coolies building the railroad to offshoring, business has always found someone to exploit, and government looks the other way.

https://www.cnbctv18.com/information-technology/nasscom-aims-to-equip-4-million-professionals-with-diversifying-digital-skills-7039561.htm

As demand for multi-technology professionals in India grows, companies need to upskill employees, which costs around $20,000 each candidate globally. In 2019-20, employers provided training to 180,000-200,000 professionals to improve their digital skills.

Nasscom said that the fresh talent pool in India has high potentials, but the relevant supply as of 2020 is 45,000-50,000, out of 8 million graduates across streams, this is expected to grow to 57,000-63,000 by 2024.

Moreover, entry-level job openings account for 68-70 percent of total job openings, where recruitment in growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16-20 percent, while demand for these roles is growing at a CAGR of 19-23 percent.

Talent growth will be affected in the short-term because of COVID-19, but as soon as the economy stabilises, growth is expected to rebound to reach 3.5-3.7 million in 2024.

Aggarwal added, "The training cost is also much lower in India, which is why global firms will continue turning to India to groom such talent."
