Wells Fargo WFC 2.47% & Co. plans to start bringing employees back to the office after Labor Day, citing the increasing availability of vaccines.

The bank, which has been telling employees each month that they should keep working from home for another month, now hopes that operations will begin to return to normal on Sept. 6, according to a memo circulated to staffers Tuesday afternoon.

The memo didn’t say whether employees would return full-time or part-time and said many of the details have yet to be worked out.

Banks have taken an ad hoc approach to bringing employees back. Citigroup Inc. said last week that most employees will be expected in the office only three days a week after the pandemic ends. Other banks, including Wells Fargo, have signaled they want to largely return to the way office life worked before the pandemic.

One side benefit of masks/social distancing/working from home is that hardly anyone has been hospitalized for the plain old fashioned flu this past year.

In 2019 the flu k–led 37,000 people.

So that would seem to support the work from home model as being a source of productivity improvements.

Less sick days.

Come on state and local governments - step up and put some restrictions! They need to make it safe. The open concept plan was terrible before. Looks even worse now. But hey, they already spent millions on the redesign so they have to use it now. Who cares about health.

I wonder if they will change course if productivity takes a nose dive after Sept. Didn’t they say productivity was actually UP during WFH? WFH is great if you are motivated and can work independently. Why drive an hour to the office to sit on a call with someone in an office on the other side of the country?

The question is, how many offices, call centres, branches and other brick and mortor buildings or floors in those buildings will be around come September. Chainsaw is selling them off right now. Based on his history, he may leave before the end of the year and go somewhere else to be the cost cut smarmy smirky guy at another place.

@omc+1a7us46Z This is WF, there won't be a plan. They'll just pass the buck down to those out of touch middle/upper managers who will make arbitrary decisions and there will be no consistency, just like the way it happened last year.

No more WFH. Bad news for dead weights.

Why would you want to go back .. the daily hour commute, the dirty bathrooms and break rooms, the person next to you that is a Freaking social butterfly 20 people at her desk a day. Heading into fall cold season.. doesn't sound like fun to me. Winter driving.. I vote to stay working from home !! Plus you get a pay cut paying for gas and your time in the car not at home.

Well now I know my retirement date. They win. I will not spend one minute getting coughed and sneezed on in an open concept office, vaccinated or not. Covid isn’t the only disease spread in those places.

People finally will look for another job. No more WFH.

Whether or not it's beneficial depends largely on the role, not so much personal preferences. One presumes that the 'back to the office plan' will be nuanced enough to make the distinction. I'm guessing mid/upper managers will have to justify whichever approach they are lobbying for.

For those excited: now when they lay you off, they can walk you out with armed security. That’s assuming you make it through the next 5 displacement waves.

They must not have had enough people leaving through attrition for them to finally make an announcement about wfh more than a month in advance

What a waste of money. Think about how many people's jobs could be saved if we weren't spending billions on useless brick and morter campuses. Charlie is a complete id–t. We really need someone that has common sense and not just trying to make a mark for themselves.

Charlie is so behind his peers on this issue. He hasn't learned from prior experiences at Mellon when he tried to force people back in the office, and that wasn't during a pandemic! For reference, he suddenly reversed course after employees threatened a lawsuit.
