Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Two types of managers

I've had two types of managers while at WFC. There are those who have no idea what they are doing but at least they are decent people who show appreciation for us and treat us decently. Then there are those (I have one like that right now) who are competent and know exactly what they are doing, but they treat us like dirt. No respect shown whatsoever. I'm wondering if there is a competent manager out there who also respects his or her people? Is anybody lucky to have that? I'm still waiting for one.

WFC has, in IT/Risk in particular, a serious problem with toxic leadership.

My last 2 managers have been both extremely knowledgeable and highly skilled. They were also advocates for our team and cared about us. My first manager, not so much. Knowledgeable, but would throw you under the bus in a heart beat. Also, he clearly had favorites.

I've only had great managers here.

I guess I hit the lazy manager jackpot. I had two in a row who basically worked part- time, and spent the time they were actually at work on personal business and outside projects. One was fired, one is still around.

The one I have now is so afraid of his boss I keep expecting him to burst into tears.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that when they promote ICs to managers they are given absolutely no training on how to manage, how to handle anything difficult with personnel, how to get the most out of people or grow people in the role They don’t really groom people into the managerial role when they know they’ll have a manager role opening soon. It seems like in an org of this size there would be a way to do that.

Is this where we go to pigeon hole thousands of coworkers that we've never actually met and have no idea if they are competent or not? Looks like it. Think about how it'd make you feel if a bunch of managers sat around saying things like, "yep, there's only 2 kinds of ICs, those that s—, and those that s—". How would you respond? Exactly.

At the end of the day what sort of manager you prefer - one who is competent or incompetent? At the stage where I am, I would prefer someone who is competent knows what we are doing, shows a pathway when I am stuck in solving a complex problem, and at the end of the day does not blame for something that did not work.

I had an extremely competent manager who treated me well. He quit 6 months later.

Oh and he was in my immediate friend circle when he hired me, for one of those roles you think you have an actual shot at getting online, but was actually created just for me.

I had a competent experienced manager who tried to stand up for “doing business the right way”, which would be best for WFC long-term. In other words, he attempted to point out that some of the cost-cutting in our area would put the bank at risk for losses which would far surpass any cost savings (we deal with extremely high $ transactions.) They let him go one year ago.

Could be worse. I have an incompetent manager that treats her subordinates like garbage.

@zdg, I am in the same boat as you. My previous manager was so awesome.. competent and treated us like family.. they let her go last year. The one now doesn’t even know what I do. Sometimes I wonder if I talk to him or just ride it out and see what happens.

8 managers in 10 years. I've been lucky. All but 2 were competent and treated us well.

I never had any decent ones. All lousy incompetent ones who treated you unfairly.

My manager two ago was competent and treated us well, but left for USBank.
My last manager was the incompetent but treats everyone awesome but was canned last fall.
My current manager is competent (he’s a smart cookie), but doesn’t know what our team exactly does yet, but treats us very well.

I had that but unfortunately they let her go in the October purge. The one I have now has so many he barely knows anyone exists.
