Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

LHH

Part of my severance package was job placement help with LHH. I'm actually not that impressed. I appreciate the review of my resume but the rest? I went through the orientation and as an older worker near the end of my career, I don't see nor can the services they offer can really benefit me.

I had done something similar which I paid for when I was displaced in 2018. It was geared toward older workers and it was equally as disappointing.

Ageism is VERY real. I'm at the point where WalMart is starting to look good! :(

I've used LHH before and both times it was helpful. I hate to say this but you get out of it what you put into it. They have some good materials and can provide some value-added assistance – but at the end of the day it's your fight and your efforts that get you the next position.

Something tells me that that coddled @2ynb+19rqKLFw will someday be one of the all time biggest b*tchers about Ageism in history when he hits his time.

Dang... is 45 really the cutoff nowadays?

Age discrimination certainly is a 'thing', but also difficult to prove. I mean, if you don't get called for an interview or you do interview but you aren't selected how do you KNOW it was age discrimination? There's a lot of qualified people out there, perhaps someone more qualified got the job? Just because we fear we are being discriminated against doesn't necessarily mean that we are. If you're over 45 and actually do get discriminated against due to age, at least you have legal protections. If so, contact a lawyer that specializes in this area of law.

Perhaps you should have made yourself more relevant rather than nursing the teet of the golden goose. You old f—ers complain now but what did you do to better position yourselves 10 years ago? You reap what you sow.

@lag+19rqKLFw, yes worked same way for me too. They gave me that push too, guess anyone that threatened them from getting paid but not doing any work they push out.

Anyways, I am making what I should be now, much happier and dont have to deal with lack of professionalism.

A little harsh. Some folks there hadn’t updated their resumes in 20 years, had no LinkedIn profile etc. Others like me were in a better place, but I still discovered useful things I’d been doing wrong. You can have great skills and experience, but not be good at selling yourself to recruiters.

Agree these services won’t find a job for you, no matter your skills — a source of disappointment to many. Sadly they also can’t eliminate ageism which is absolutely real. It can almost break you, at times in the process.

Good luck to the OP, hope he/she finds the right role soon.

If you have no idea how to put together a job search LHH is really useful but there's no magic they can only work with what you got.

Nope, not a snowball’s chance I’d go back. I found another role, although it took some time. But still check in sometimes because I have friends still there who are so worried. And sometimes there’s a question about post-layoff I chime in on, in case it’s helpful.

I was happy at WF for a number of years, so not completely bitter. Getting out was a blessing, so I’m grateful they gave me a nudge or I might still be there.

@jsk+19rqKLFw I thought guidance on how to handle tough questions about salary expectations, why I was looking etc was so helpful. And I learned how to research a company and demonstrate why I was a fit.

I had been looking before I was laid off. Using LHH I learned how totally unprepared I had been for interviews. No wonder I wasn’t having much luck pre-layoff.

@jsk+19rqKLFw I did utilize their resume/LinkedIn review services. I've yet to receive their recommendations (and it's bee over a week).

Did you get layed off twice here? I see a lot of people who come back, seems very strange to return here

Not everyone has had a great experience with LHH but I found the service incredibly beneficial. (I was also more than 1/2 way through my career when displaced.)

I had a good coach who helped with my marketing plan (which I never gave anyone but thought was awesome for getting my “story” together), and having (or avoiding) salary discussions. I also loved my weekly networking group. Excellent facilitator which makes a huge difference. And the other job seekers all helped each other.

Some good webinars on salary negotiations, using LinkedIn, working w recruiters etc. And you get access to D&B Hoover’s which is super helpful for interview prep.

I encourage my former WF colleagues to give it a solid shot. You won’t find it 100% helpful, but there could be some gems if you stick it out.

And yet our overfunded DEI group cant seem to pick up on that as discrimination along with natives or asians.

Huh.

LHH provides a lot of very helpful ideas and tactics. As an experienced worker, we cannot assume that the job search will be like it was when we were fresh out of school. We need to adapt.

For me the best advice was about crafting and tailoring my resume with the key words from the job posting. I had great success both internally and externally.
