Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Company changed my Job Title

The company changed my job title to one that i don't like. If i go job hunting is it appropriate that i use the prior one that i was hired for? I want to find another job and im working on my resume but but feel some what conflicted if i can use my original job title if i look external. When the new company does my background check will it blow up in my face?

There are potentially three ways of clarifying a position: a) the officer title or rank b) the job title that you are called in the HR system like the old Project Management Manager title (dumb title), and c) the job that you really do. I always use C on my resume. Do you think that some of the big shots with Business Functional Manager or Bus Init Mgr really put those ambiguous titles on their resumes? Don’t inflate (lie) - it’s wrong and too easy to get caught these days, but don’t let someone else categorize your work history.

Honestly, like you look at a title of engineer:

At wells fargo - here is what the task for Tech Engineers are:

  • use spell check on pre-written cr's
  • do manual patching
  • do everything manual
  • make excel spreadsheet
  • write one line batch script (from 1920)

Other Companies

  • develop patterns for modern public cloud stack
  • develop terraform modules
  • use ansible to maintain state
  • know python, Bash, powershell for scripting
  • Know Kubernetes, EKS, AKS, microservices

Same job title, but first one no one wants, second one in high demand

The WF internal job titles usually don't matter to outside companies as they don't really mean much. However, your corporate job title may matter. These depend on which part of the bank you work in, but for example the corp job title could be Analyst, Associate, AVP, VP, SVP, etc. There's usually a separate process to get those corporate titles.

Nobody really cares about your precise title out there its just a title. I agree with previous poster use what makes sense for the job you're applying for. Whatever the past company titles I've had I use something more descriptive .NET Developer, Oracle Developer, who knows what a "Software Engineer" does. But never mislead. If asked about the difference tell them company title doesn't adequately describe responsibility.

Most job titles are meaningless outside the company. Use the title that best describes your responsibilities, and make sure you don‘t embellish and are consistent — resume, LinkedIn etc. Recruiters compare the two for consistency. FYI I left WF a few months ago. No references requested but there was a background check. They confirmed years of service and did I leave “in good standing” vs being fired. That’s it, I think. My resume titles do not perfectly match all my WF titles and no one seemed to care. They don’t provide salary without your consent but according to my recruiter they can (and do) confirm your bonus.

Why not just put " reclassified from "?

Sometimes it makes sense to describe your role rather than saying something meaningless like “business initiatives consultant” or whatever.

I don't think they give out Salary and Bonus information.

People get hired and think they've taken a job with a particular title and then then they change the title on them a little later... Seems kinda unethical on the part of the company.

also depend how far off it is, if it is just a different term for same thing, does it really matter? Use the new one

Wells uses the Work Number which will show your last title, hire and termination date, salary and bonus. Future employers will call the Work Number and see this information, so stay truthful.

I wouldn’t put Court Jester down as a job title either.
