Anyone file for unemployment benefits yet? Especially in California

Last day of work was back on December 4. Looks like 60 day notice period will end tomorrow. Trying to figure out when my last actually day is. Whether its December 4 or when my notice period ends which is February 1?

Last day of employment for me is January 31st. Severance starts on February 1st. In California, one is eligible for unemployment benefits while on severance. Severance payments plus unemployment benefits (including the extra $300 or so), and WF benefits until severance ends. That is, of course, if one signed the release agreement.

CA EDD page on severance and unemployment benefits:

https://www.edd.ca.gov/UIBDG/Total_and_Partial_Unemployment_TPU_46035.htm

Remember that there is a one-week unpaid waiting period, and our states it starts the week you apply. Also, given the fraud issues for which CA EDD is now famous, the application process takes a little longer than it used to since it now includes an authentication procedure that takes a few steps. On top of that, one needs to do some calculations regarding income in the last year or so. So, start the application process right away! It's worth the money, and you deserve it after being laid off.

Good luck!

Your last day is the last day of the notice period, whether working or non working. It will be on your separation package paperwork. You are an employee until then and so unemployment doesn’t kick in until you are no longer an employee.

I called displacement services and they said the leave continuation starts today. End of employment is March 28. It could be different for you depending on how long you have been with the company. I'm going to wait to apply for unemployment until March 28.

Your last day worked will be on your separation paperwork. Use that date in case EDD wants confirmation.
