Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Lack of Job Opportunities because of Location Strategy?

Has anyone else been prevented from posting for a new role with the company, had their application rejected, or weren't given an offer because they weren't located in one of the hub locations? I was the top candidate for a new role at Wells Fargo, but they couldn't make me an offer because I wasn't in the right location. I finally took a new job outside of Wells Fargo because there was no way to move to a different role and progress in my career unless I was in a hub. I'm thankful for my new job, but walked away from a lot of benefits because there was no way for me to move within Wells Fargo. I was working with other Wells Fargo people in my location, but because we weren't in a hub, I had no future with the company.

Do you speak hindi?

The location strategy is to get cheap 7$ per hour from butts in seats in india.

I was just rejected for a role last week that I have the perfect background for because they were only hiring in Minneapolis and I'm in San Francisco. Cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, I guess.

Schart, Mayor Daley and C.J.T. are smiling... this is exactly what they want to hear.

These people have never known pain, outside of slinging it at “outsiders” that is.

What a sad state of affairs from callous evil people.

lol pxd, if I never set foot in a city with more than a few thousand people in it again I'd be happy as a clam. NYC? Not just "no", but hell no. Even new yorkers don't want to live there, people have been bailing like crazy and most won't be coming back. To each their own, but I want no part of big cities, their taxes, their pollution, the congestion, the crime, the severe lack of nature. Just, no.

short answer, yes.. If you're not in a posted location for the job you're applying for, honestly I wouldn't bother posting. You won't be considered. I was recently approached about a job internally that I was a great fit for and said I would be willing to consider relocation as I'm not in one of their locations currently. They decided to look at other candidates first and will come back to me if those don't pan out. I'm guessing they don't want to pay relocation, which I wasn't even expecting. The whole thing is very shortsighted as anyone that's been here long enough knows we tend to change our minds on our locations a few times a decade or so. It would make much more sense to make sure you're filling the job with the right skills vs a person with some of the right skills in a particular location.

To CSLX: Not everyone is looking to move to the top of the ladder. Some just want to progress in their careers and take the next step to challenge themselves, learn a new skill, or apply their skills to a new part of the company. They don't want to be the next CEO. It's hard to understand why a company would intentionally stall employee progression and eliminate opportunities just to try to force people into a few offices when most of the workforce doesn't want to be in an office environment long term anyway.

It is very short-sighted to drive good performers out of a company to meet a constantly changing location strategy, which changes based on where the CEO is located. When Charlie leaves or is fired, where will the next hub location be? Having a hub in NYC can't be an effective way to reduce expenses.

Not just this company but every company I have worked, if you want to move up the ladder you need to around the decision-makers. And do these decision-makers sit? You guess it right - At the HUB! So unless you are not a hub or have a close relationship with higher-ups, the possibility of moving up the ladder is very low. No offense to anyone, just my thought.

To the losers below: personally I would love to move to NYC. Charlotte is a big rural area plus a little bit of suburb setting when compare to NYC. You don’t want to live in a rural area forever, do you?

Just be glad you're OUT of this place! Who cares about less benefits, you're gone and your peace and happiness is worth much more!

All the people who report to CEO now are all centered in New York. New York City!??! Have you seen the old Pace Picante Sauce commercial with the cowboys around the campfire and someone brings salsa made in NYC?! They didn't like the salsa made in NYC or New York City, lots don't! Who wants to live in that high tax, high crime ridden,, expensive Sh—Hole?! Not me! This was traditionally a Midwest, Southern bank that catered to small biz and the Average Joes, but now it's a New York City centered company. Puke.

Oh yes. The last TWO roles I have been in, have been in a major city but it's not a formal hub. In both of those roles, it was THEM (not me) who reduced and eliminated office space and cancelled their leases with CPG because they said they did not want to pay for the expensive space, so we were forced to be remote. Their choice, not mine.

So, why would I just up and move to a hub city when THEY have been the ones who cancelled the office space and lease b/c they don't want to pay for it. What happens when I uproot my life to another city and they do the same sh–?!

I know I've been passed over for tons of roles because I'm not in a hub city even though I said in application I'm willing to relocate for the right opportunity (need my head examined). All of this discrimination and exclusion of people not in the hubs, but are high performers, must be part of their diversity, equity and exclusion campaign. Inclusion is supposed to be geography too, but it's not. It's all talk! Do as I say, not as we do!

I'm not just going to move to another hub in my current role because they've even cancelled office space in HUB locations and booted people to remote, citing expensive office space paid to CPG. So how do you win?!!

This place is f—ing bipolar and the wind changes direction weekly! It's all designed to drive natural attrition! And why would anyone sane who cares about their health, relocate in a pandemic!? I get emails weekly that the hub address that is in Teamworks has had someone infected with COVID, so going into the office is not intelligent anyway - at least for 6 more months until enough people get vaccinated.

This place is a bunch of bull-sh–! I'm interviewing externally, never have I been treated so poorly at any organization as this one, and I've been rated meets and/or exceeds every year, accomplished lots and helped the team WIN and achieve goals. And they treat you like you're some SoB off the street! Total lack of values!

90% of these non-customer facing jobs don't require you to be in the office anyway, so what is the big deal?! What decade is this place in, 1970?! Meanwhile, the higher ups who I report to have always worked from home while they tell the rank and file they have to been in an office (at least pre-covid), the height of hypocrisy!

Yes, it's a mess. And the 30 minute wait on HR WELLS makes it worse. Over chat I got a "You know what /NAME/ I suggest opening a consultation with Employee Relations" from a chat after 20 minutes.

The secret is to call and chat at the same time. See who comes on the line first. They must be getting a tax break for moving folks to offices. A few on my team passed over for location strategy and a manager had the nerve to mention it on a team meeting.

Upward mobility is dead, hiring outsiders must be cheaper.

Hub strategy is terrible and Wells will see quite a few talented people walk away because of it. I know of 2 folks in the last few months that hub strategy screwed them and are now looking outside if Wells.
