Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Is it risky to take on a remote job right now?

I've seen several openings for remote jobs that'd be perfect fits for me but I haven't applied for any of them yet. I'm worried that once more companies start bringing back their employees to the office, I'll be screwed. These are all supposedly permanently remote position but I don't think there's a way to know for sure.

I also left for 100% remote position, and will never go back to an office. I also got huge pay raise and a promotion. I wont ever take a job in an office again.

I've been full-time WFH for almost 5 years now...even a little longer if you count nearly a year as a contract resource supporting WF. If they decide to make me go to a cubicle post-PLANdemic w/o a big bump in compensation, then they can go do physically impossible procreative acts to themselves.

FWIW I work in ICS.

Every move is risky now... go with your heart.

Believe in you. The world is changed forever and remote will always be avail for the competent. (You didn’t say you’re incompetent and have a coke problem.)

If you want to be remote at WF after COVID, good luck! You are essentially stuck in the role you hold unless you want to go into one of the 7 locations CS and MN have approved... one of which happens to be New York where Chainsaw's penthouse is conveniently located. Last I knew, WF was based in San Francisco, not NYC, and SF isn't on the list!

See if you can confirm the job would be permanent remote. That's what I was able to negotiate in my new role.

Since nothing is guaranteed, it's all about your comfort with risk. You have just as good a chance of the position being stable as any other position.

Most interviewers will ask if you have questions during the interview. That is the perfect time to ask about the longevity of the remote status of the job. They’ll either come out and say it’s permanent remote or they won’t, and you can take their response (or lack thereof) into consideration.

it's not risky unless you move to a metro that doesn't have other jobs for you to take if the job doesn't work out.

What do you have to lose by applying? You are worrying about what will happen once you get an offer, accept it, start working, get vaccinated and the pandemic eases — but you’ve not even interviewed yet. If you are interested in the role, apply and if you get an offer you can determine if it’s worth leaving for. Worst case, you turn them down but get lots of interview prep that’ll come in handy later.

Many companies now realize they don't need an onsite workforce after COVID forced us to work remotely, and they are re-evaluating their work location to include more remote options. If you find a good remote opportunity, you should explore it. I left WF for a fully remote position and increased my salary by 25%, better benefits, and non-toxic environment.

I would be reluctant to take remote at face value right now as far as doing it long term is concerned. Better the devil you know.

In case I wasn't clear, these are positions outside of WFC.
