Why do so many dislike HR

A huge majority of us here in HR are just regular people trying to make ends meet. I know about many who care about every single person we interact with and we are trying to make it easier for everybody. At the same time, we have to follow directions and some of the directions are bad - however, it all comes from the very top and we have no ability to push back.

So, why do so many dislike HR?

@rcs That's exactly what happened to me. Follow protocol and get displaced. Report it to HR and get told lies and falsehoods to save their asses!

HR is the most useless function in WF.

I've worked in many companies.... This is the worst HR dept I've ever had to deal with.

Remember.... HR works for the company, not for you.
They are protecting the company from you, not you from the toxic people in the company.

it's not personal, it's business. and the business of HR is run poorly at WF, period. It's not the people that work in HR. It's how the policies are unilaterally applied with literally not thought to impacts on filling needed positions and pay equity. You can't even get an honest answer half the time. Recently asked HR since they make initial assessment on offers for candidates, what we would pay in relation to midpoint for a high qualified candidate and was basically told "it depends" but we like to leave room to grow.. What kind of non answer is that? Are we able to pay mid point for the right candidates, or not? Read the other post on "HR recruiting" from a few days ago, that also will give you a good indication of known issues with HR. Its like fighting an uphill battle just to get to the people needed to actually implement the work we all have to do, and it seems the only thing HR cares about in hiring is location and demographics. Who cares about skill sets, right?

Cost center. You add no value to products or process. You contribute nothing to the top line and you make it harder to cut the dead weight.

HR is a cancer to corporate America.

The folks on HR really are like the rest of us. Let’s place the responsibility where it belongs - a lack of leadership (DG) and a traditional corporate culture where maintaining the status quo is a priority.

So, HR is “just following orders” like good little Germans.

How about pushing back when you’re asked to toss out resumes which don’t happen to have the target demographic du jour?

There are plenty of great people in HR that care and want to do what's right. There are some rogue people of course that ultimately do what's best for the company. Some issues exist in every group though

HR here is an absolute JOKE! They don't care about you, employee relations, improving team member engagement, dealing with INEFFECTIVE and TOXIC leaders and managers, or improving the culture and perception in this place, one bit!

I don’t dislike the employees of HR at all. I do dislike WFC’s HR policies and HR Management and their (lack of) service to employees. Unreasonably long hold times, complicated policies that make getting the right answer far too difficult, not working for and protecting employees, HR pushing more and more “classic HR responsibilities” to Department Managers. I really can’t think of one good thing to say about the department, unfortunately. But I don’t hold that against the employees.

Human Resources took the Human out of Human Resources a long time ago.

The person who brings the problem is the problem. Always. No exceptions.

Unless, of course, the person with the problem is a manager who wants to get rid of an excellent employee who turned him down for a date. Then you’re right there with a helping hand.

Yes..., HR is a tough group but outside of work, I’ve just got to say that here in Meetings and Events we love them. Not sure whether it is the vague non-business, fuzzy skill set or just that Payroll is THE HR trophy, but these folks make the money and more importantly they really know how to spend it and how to enjoy it. We call off for two days after their off sites at Ruby Skye.

Wonderful people and none of this schmoozing clients c-ap... they just get down to partying and we love that!

HR guy is trolling, y'all.

He/she/they know that HR works to protect the company/shareholders, not employees.

Stop feeding him/her/they.

Its because employees expect advocacy and just intercession from you after you appoint yourself as moral authority.

Then when we need you, you throw us away lime trash for the good of the company and hide behind process.

You tell us to raise our hand but cannot do the same.

You are all cowards and incompetent lifers

How about they allow managers and other employees to abuse their co-workers to where they are breaking the labor laws and they turn their head. I personally if I was in HR would not be able to live with myself doing this type of illegal and unethical behavior. They are sick people! Really these things need to be dealt with outside of this organization.

well where do I start on this.... how bout echoing all of the above.. I worked for a set of exec's who retaliated against anyone who reported them or stood up to them or even had a differing opinion. The see something say something is a joke... I reported about issues from disability discrimination to other issues such as retaliation. How bout secret meetings in the summer of 2020 where it was discussed how can we bulk lay off people when we only have a manual process and getting that done by sept of 2020. How bout Sr. Executives in HR not listening to the direction given to them by technology on how to implement items.... How bout completely ignoring designs and just doing what they want.. How about setting unrealistic time frames for migrating off current HR systems to new ones. I could go on and on and on about the things that are wrong with HR... many of which were specified already.... some of which have not....

Have you EVER had an employee file a complaint about a manager, and NOT taken the attitude that the person filing the complaint was the problem?

No. It doesn’t happen. I work in a group with an extremely abusive director level leader. My direct manager counseled his reports, as a group, not to go to HR about said director, because HE had done so, and had it backfire.

I believe my manager. He reports directly to the abuser and does his best to protect us all. There is not much he can do though.

So the abuser carries on abusing, and we have no recourse.

HR is worse than nothing.

Here's a different take from everyone on here.

How about the three years in a row I was denied a promotion to the next level job title simply because my compa ratio was too low? This is in spite of the fact that for 2 of those years I did double the documented work of every other senior titled coworker on my team? Including the team lead. I also left them the easy work, taking all the issues they didn't want to work because they were more difficult.

Or the countless job screens where I've been told I would hear back, only to never hear anything more. Even a denial. Even if it's negative closure, it's still closure.

That's without touching the countless stories that everyone else here has related.

All while HR gets to fly around the country for events while travel is not allowed. While HR gets to go to the sales and service conference without ever providing, let alone excelling, in either sales or service.

You're not a corporate version of a social worker, you're more like a corporate mob fixer.

In my career, HR has done absolutely nothing for me or my colleagues. I recall many instances when leadership abuse was reported to HR and ZERO was done. Exit interviews are formality and, again, nothing is done to improve leadership. At best, HR will enforce “sensitivity training” (a 1-3 day online class) to those leaders whom were reported but the damage is already done. HR protects leadership by doing nothing or requiring evidence next to things we see in Mission Impossible. Even when evidence is provided (usually email), HR will make excuses on behalf of the leader they’re protecting by stating message were interpreted out of context and somehow the direct report is defensive or angry.

So why do people hate HR? It’s because they do nothing to protect the people that actually do the work. I’d rather have a AI-driven HRBP than a human, at least the AI will actually respond to people in a timely manner

You mean the department who turned their back on team members for 15 years while they raised their hands for unethical practices and then black listed them as you sent them to the unemployment line.

Yeah,,, you guys earned it.

Because you don’t allow voluntary displacements - now I have to sit here in a low morale environment where everyone is trying to fend for themselves, hoard work, etc. Why can’t I have the option to take a package and LEAVE PLEASE?

HR - how about those of us on this board do a role reversal (we will be ER and you will be the employee) with you? When you have a manager who is retaliating against you and ruining your future with the company with meritless PIP’s and Warnings, and you provide us documented proof and evidence of it, instead of following the protocol communicated in the employee handbook, we will instead have you “displaced” so we can obtain a release from you, and then we’ll secretly black list you from ever obtaining a position with the company again. Perhaps then you’ll understand.

You ask for feedback and you say it's anonymous, but if someone tells the truth about a bad manager, you out the person being honest. It's happened to me.

Many don’t like HR the function because their sole purpose is to protect the company (which sometimes helps the employee of course). It’s nothing against you personally but I think sometimes employees forget to make that distinction.

For one, ghosting applicants.. even internal candidates. Even after sending multiple emails, you don’t even get an acknowledgment from the recuriter.
