Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

HR recruiters hold too much power

I am a hiring manager who has recently deal with HR in recruiting for new positions on my team. in case anyone wonders why we don't seem to hire the right fit for jobs, know that HR/recruiting is essentially running the show now. The hiring managers don't have much say anymore, HR is screening out applicants who are otherwise very qualified due to location (without even asking if candidates would relocate); they are putting diversity above qualifications to get to a "diverse pool" and are making the assessment of what the offer to candidates should be! And the recruiters never have a working knowledge of the business they are hiring in and clearly not the required skill sets, I had to even explain what the difference was between first line and second line risk roles. It's embarrassing and now I can see why we struggle so much. This also goes to those that wonder why when they post for a role that they're perfect for, and you don't even get a phone screen. If you're not in a "approved location"; are remote or do not have the right diversity boxes checked you're simply not being looked at.

You can bet if the hiring manager has lots of consonants in their name, they will hire someone with lots of consonants in their name. So don’t even bother if you see such a hiring manager, I have learned. Unfortunately in tech, you see a lot of those hiring managers now.

appreciate the info being shared I have applied for quite a few internal positions that I was more than qualified for and never had even a recruiter screen but I'm not in a hub location. willing to move, but apparently that's not preferred either way. very unsettling that we'd rather take chances on unknown talent than give our internal employees the opportunity. This seems like a short sighted policy when many companies are considering additional flexibility in location and amount of time in office due to the success of remote work from the pandemic experiment. Sad that our leaders can't have a big picture view on the whole thing.

Word of advice: if you see an internal job posting you are really interested in, send an email to the hiring manager listed on the posting. It sends them a signal you are interested and might help you get past the recruiter. I did this for an interview and the manager told me to send him my resume. I ended up getting an interview I can pretty much guarantee that I wouldn't have if I never contacted him.

Believe it. I was told this in even more explicit detail by a hiring manager when I asked why I wasn’t getting an offer despite my clear credentials and ability, which I had demonstrated by bringing my work I to the interview and discussing both mine and his projects in detail.

He said “xxxxx, I’ll tell you the truth. We have to hire an xxxxxxx xxxxxxx”. I offered to start my own company and bill them directly. It worked out but I have never looked at corporate America the same way since.

I have never trusted corporate America since.

I think it's about time for some folks to write letters to the EEOC. They preach DEI, but exclude highly qualified people even though they aren't in a hub (and are willing to relocate expense free), hire their buddies from JPChase, etc. I have moved my search to external, lost a ton of respect for this place and their recruiting function and process altogether.

Try having blond hair and being a double minority. The irony explosion gets ridiculous.

This is not new by any means. I first ran into this in 1983 while hiring at a large Boston based bank. I have run into it as an applicant many times since,

When HR reduces hiring to required target demographics which have nothing to do with knowledge, education, skills, experience or achievements, that is pure in your face discrimination. I’ve fought with this my whole career.

I have bonde hair and blue eyes and have exact qualifications, but got no interview even, this is discrimination

I'm not getting in to race baiting. The best person should get the job regardless of race, color, nation origin, location, etc. I can say the internal recruiting process is flawed, a complete sh– show, and a joke! I was one of two finalists on a role recently and the other person got it because they allegedly had more experience. The hiring manager was very nice. Some of the hiring managers interview you and won't even spend 60 seconds to call you to follow up, it's so rude! After you've given them an hour or two for interviews. That's the way it goes sometimes, but this company treats internal performing people worse than dirt compared to external hires. I haven't been here that long, and I perform and do my job and more. It should not be this hard for good people to compete and get internal roles!

@iib+19Tf77U5 Started at the top of HR because of gender. Absolutely no doubt.

I’m in all seven of the superficial undesirable demographics... yes, all seven. To see the pay scale that these untested, unaccomplished new hire come in at based solely upon their pictures is an insult to my entire career’s work and achievements.

I no longer care. Show me the applicant picture and I will tell you their qualifications.

You just know I’m right, and I am.

For those of you playing the race card on this one - not buying it - i'm a white guy and have been treated like $&^@ in interviews - having people pull up my resume for the first time during an interview, realizing in the first 2 min of an interview that I'm just there so they can say the interviewed someone else fir the job. Getting a sweet job is a freaking challenge no matter what your race or color.

I’m a white female, and I think it’s funny to see white males complain about being discriminated against. They have no problem with discrimination when it works in their favor. Then when they don’t automatically go to the front of the line they scream about how unfair it is. I see it every day.

@ndx, no it doesn't make it right but you see what we have experienced and we continue to experience it over and over. What you all are complaining about doesn't happen as often as we minorities go through it.
I was sitting in an employment agency and the agent was chatting that the girl they were sending over was young and blonde and will fit what they're looking for.
I cannot tell you how many times I have walked into interviews and was treated rudely because they see a minority come in the door and dismiss you instantly.
We have fought back and complained and took it long enough but still we experience it.

What no one wants to say out loud is if you are in tech and you are US born you don’t have a chance because a good 80-90% are foreign born. If you say it out loud you are a racist that hates diversity.

Haven't had an issue with this personally. Recruiter recommends people for interview, but if I want to interview someone they didn't pick it's no problem adding them to the list. I have had recruiters talk about diversity goals but presuming a selection is justified I've never had a problem hiring the person I wanted. That said, I haven't hired someone in 2021 yet, so maybe the whole process has gone to pot recently.

@ccb/rxy let DG head of HR know all about this so he will make sure his recruiters won’t bluntly tell you they won’t hire you because of your (white) skin. It works both ways. Tell the truth then you have nothing to be afraid

RXZ here. Call your bluff. This was in NC in 2018. We hired an Asian Female who lasted all of six months. And then was terminated for attendance issues. She should have never been hired. The only candidates I was able to interview (with my DMs supervision) was an African, Asian and a Caucasian person. All females. The two that I know applied and were not given a chance to interview were Caucasian males. Can’t remember the recruiters name.

Classic Wells Fargo

A lack of diversity at the very top means you should set phantom diversity quotas elsewhere

I am all for equal opportunity being a minority myself. However, if a person is not qualified, they are not qualified. Now if they are refused because they are disabled (which I am aware), of a different race, religion, orientation, etc. then that is a different conversation.

This is true. I was blatantly told by my recruiter that we were looking for “an African or Asian” candidate for my position. While I knew of two other great people who applied for the role, they were never screened due to their race.

Wells Fargo has become such a cesspool. The Fintechs are going to put them out of business anyway. It is just going to be cut, cut, cut, and downsize from here. The glory days of the big banks is over! You can stick around and ride it all the way down, or find a job with a fintech and have a long term career future.

Not surprised at all. HR has held too much power at Chase for years and you know where they all came from.

The hiring manager should determine who they hire. Period. HR has gotten too involved in the hiring process, way out of bounds from their original purpose.
