Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Everyone over 50 should be laid off

This is really the easiest way to get Wells where it needs to be operationally.

The over 50 crowd has likely been here for decades, hasn't brought anything new/modern to the table in many years, and is paid a comp that no other company would ever think of if the same person applied there.

A one-time sweep of over 50ers. Saves tons of money and modernizes the company, thus boosting morale.

I'm 40 in IT (software engineer), which feels young in this company. The long time older employees are honestly most helpful in helping understand the hellish bureaucracy involved in trying to make any sort of change or update at all......

Hm. While the bank proper may not harbor this view, what recently happened in my group ended up playing out that way. We were moved from Corporate Risk to Operations a few months back, and last week they not only implemented spans and layers, they also mapped us to new Operations job families. Several lost manager titles, and many received reductions in bonuses and salary ranges. Additionally, with the changes disproportionately affecting the higher wage earners, it seems to many of us the bank is trying to force attrition and manage us out. However, the bank had better be careful, because it certainly looks to many of us like age discrimination; many of us higher wage earners have been with the bank a very long time and just happen to be 45+.

That is age discrimination and illegal. How about you appreciate the benefits of experience.

Oh yeah, I am over 50 and an internal Wells Fargo IT employee. I took a college course in Assembler too. Kind of forgot about that because I never actually had to use Assembler on the job. It did teach you how the computers work at the micro base level though. Very interesting. Mathematical logic. 0 and 1 are the "thing". Got a grade of "A". Bits and bytes and long nights. Ha!

Child, we didn’t have the luxury of being “People who started out young in IT, likely working on the IBM Mainframe with Cobol and SAS.”. No child, we worked in assembly code. We hand mapped data to 3270 screens and built state managed transaction monitors which IBM copied to build CICS. We later build tools like SASS. We hand mapped data to 3270 screens.

You children are performing point and click coding with frameworks while standing on the shoulders of 50 years of developers. You could never ever understand let alone delve deeply into our expertise. These gifts from god whic you use are truly out gifts to you from diving down to the metal before you were born.

Honestly, you don’t have the ability to lock in and focus for a daily12 hour session which is the way that these technologies were built and literally the only way they could have been built.

I don’t see any bright future in your career. Please give yourself a favor, resign before further damages you may cause to your team or your manager.

A lot of the high level technology jobs at Wells Fargo are held by older employees. People who started out young in IT, likely working on the IBM Mainframe with Cobol and SAS. Over the many years their experience has kept up and grown greater with the latest technologies. Building IT skills over many decades leads to a very experienced IT employee. Wells Fargo is great in that it has many free technical training classes available to keep up skills with the latest technologies. People who started out in IT, and have spent their entire careers in IT, just keep on going with the latest thing. Prior IT experience always makes it easier to learn some new IT technology. Until death do they part. Then the younger employees will not have the older, greatly experienced IT employees to train them anymore. Too bad.

To OP:

I wonder if you would be so bold as to say that with your name attached and without the cover of anonymity to hide your ageism and lack of logic.

There are amazing, bright, agile, disciplined, discerning and experienced people in every age group. Likewise there are lazy, undisciplined, immoral, entitled, self-indulgent clock-watchers in every age group.

Do us a favor and resign if you haven't already been fired.

The most talented, intelligent, and skilled people do not feel the need to boost themselves by criticizing others. They are confident in what they bring to the table and let their positive attributes do the talking for them.

I automatically recognize anyone who steps on others to promote themselves to be insecure and emotionally underdeveloped.

Having said that: I’m pretty sure OP is just being an itch.

Well I retired from this awful joint as it seemed the newbies who came in and created fraud was destroying the company. They know it all but don't even understand risks that seasoned employees understand. Hard to be a sheriff among outlaws. That's age discrimination you jerk. Go back to your womanizing and golf.

@OP+19GaOEwU

Child, you should share your post with your parents and discuss their achievements over their 50 years. The last 50 years comprised more societal and technology change than the prior 500 years combined.

You have absolutely no idea what you are inheriting virtually for free.

Why don't you propose that to your Team & HR? Send a company wide email declaring your thoughts about laying off people over 50 and your reasons and beliefs about them.

I'm almost 50. I've completed full digital transformation of legacy monolithic architectured system to microservices architecture for several erp systems. I was incorporating RPA (Artificial Intelligence) into applications before you probably ever heard of it. (Or, maybe you still don't know what that means). I wrote use cases for UiPath years ago before anyone knew who they were. I work at Wells Fargo AND I'm a woman.

Stop with the nonsense. A 25 year old can choose to be lazy and complacent as well as any 60 year old.

Cut the fluff, sure.
But never do it by age.

This did have me wondering what would happen in, say, Ops if every over-50 person disappeared overnight. Imean, I guess the kids could eventually learn enough regex to read the bash scripts, but they wouldn’t like it.

Most of us at 50 or around that +/-5 can run circles around this younger, entitled, non-work ethic generation ( not all but a significant portion). Some of these folks wonder why they don't get promotions. I had a young lady who performed one function well and mentally checked out but thought her degree from a diploma mill (strayer) meant something or equated to an owed promotion. No good people, you work for it and earn it.
