Internal hire

Just wondering what the internal hiring process is? I don’t want my manager to know that I am looking for jobs. So let’s say I will get the job.. will they make the offer first or check with my manager first? I am worried that if I reject the offer ( May be the pay did not match my expectations? after latter, my manager will hold it against me.

Yes, these internal interviews are a joke. Why do they even waste our times when they already have a candidate in mind? The hiring managers do not even reply back to your thank you email.. how pathetic!!

WF HR here. After reading the comments so far, I have to say that there are many well-intentioned but bad advice being given (not counting those who offer nonsensical comments in an attempt to get a reaction or attention from someone).

The recruiter and hiring manager cannot contact your manager without your permission and not until they are close to making a decision in your favor or ready to extend an offer. It is not in your best interests to give that permission any earlier than that.

As for those who believe that managers will not react negatively upon learning that their team member is interviewing, think again. That may have been true years ago when WF was growing and could do no wrong. But now, managers live in fear of expense reduction initiatives, as well as span and control. If you have a manager with a team headcount that is right on the cusp, chances are very good that your manager will not want to willingly let you go (especially when it means that their own manager job is on the line).

I think the firm is not really looking at the internal talent pool. I have been here for 2 years and started applying a year after I started (in line with the policy). So far the iny interviews I have had is clearly for Show.

What I want to know is why it’s so hard to get hired internally- it seems recently the company just wants to hire externally. I would think being an internal candidate would mean something

I moved to a new job about 2 years and the recruiter called me to ask in I have told my current manager. I hadn't and she asked me to let my manager know, email her back so she could reach out for references. I think if the recruiter asks you to talk to your manager, I suspect you are the finalist.

HR and the hiring Manager will not say anything to your manager unless you give the ok. I have moved around the company over the years and they have always asked me to notify my manager once I am going to get an offer.

They’ll find out, so better to hear it from you.

pay and benefits too low here, I suggest going to a position also where you have a chance to make an impact. here just a bunch of paper pushers.

The process changed a couple years ago that if you’re a finalist, he will require you to tell your manager before they will move forward. So you won’t be able to get an offer without telling them you’re a candidate for a new role. It s—s and there’s no way around it.

I don't tell my manager I've interviewed unless the recruiter asks if they can contact my current manager. Then I tell them. No point adding unnecessary tension in a relationship.

Just went through this a little while ago. The hiring manager wanted to talk to my current manager. Not sure if it would be a deal breaker but I said it was OK even though I wasn't really comfortable with them talking. I ended up getting an offer. I don't know if it happens every single time, but all the people I know who have switched jobs internally said their new managers wanted to talk with their current managers first.

if you are the final candidate the hiring manager will need to reach out to your current manager to negotiate a start date. that start date is required to get an offer letter generated and sent to you. my guess is the hiring manager and or recruiter will talk to you prior to this ticket you know your the final candidate and to give you a verbal unofficial offer with salary info. you don't need to tell your manager at all but I would at minimum tell them before the hiring manager calls.

If I get past the initial HR screening, I let my manager know that I'm being considered and have an interview. In my experience, the hiring manager has asked me if I've told my manager I'm interviewing and let me know they were going to contact them. It happens all the time, so I doubt your manager will react negatively. Good luck!
