Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

With the company moving to managers requiring not just 7 but 10 direct reports, what's the pathway to becoming a manager?

I'm just curious as to how this will play out long-term; I personally have zero interest in managing.

Maybe, but there will be a whole lot of exceptions, unless they are cool with ICs with no manager. Are we going to have branches with no manager?

How quickly we forget. This was all on a previous roadmap. First phase was less than 7. Second phase was/is less than 10. Now to be clear just having the 10+ doesn’t make you safe, it’s simply one metric that has been met.

Compliance spans and layers requirement is no less than 6 direct reports. Is Compliance going up to 10 direct reports soon?

Doesn't appear to be 10...there's zillions of managers with less than 10 in the company right now. So it might be going to 10, but it's clearly not there yet, not across the entire enterprise. Are you talking specifically about Risk, or a global policy?

I now have 17 fte directs and 5 India that I am fully managing, but not counting towards my direct count. I started with 6.

Pretty sure we are at 8...but suspect 10 is coming soon enough...As for growing into higher management....We still haven't seen the levels reduced they way Charlie wants so the opportunities there will shrink more...Many of my colleagues have come to realization that further growth would only happen somewhere else.

Spans and Layers hit our team today. We have one manager who's going from three direct reports to ten. How that person will do it, I'll never know!

Probably not, but good managers do.

@zxb+19AXBKsG - trying to say that now you have to be extremely experienced to even get an opportunity. I have about 12 years and have a few dotted line resources but no real management experience. The people in the Manager roles will experience even fewer movement. Just creates a log jam of people sitting to be picked off by outsourcing.

You get the "3 or so" experience at the supervisory level. Many LOBs have a role like that, work director, lead teller (well, there used to be LTs anyway...), supervisor, whatever. That's the stepping stone to management and 7+ (or maybe 10+).

Right, most people would start with 3 or so folks, then move to 7-10. Now nobody can get that experience without just being thrown into the deep end. Bad for professional growth if you ask me and will impose succession issues.

I don't have any management ambitions but this will be a problem company wide

Well 'some groups' are even higher than 10, just the nature of their LOB...the question is when/if it will become mandatory across the entire company.

Some groups are already going to 10. It's already happening.

@iee+19AXBKsG , what's this part about 15 years experience?

IF that happens it will be much more difficult to move up to management roles, no doubt. Fewer positions and surviving managers will, at least in theory, be the best and most experienced. Still, with 200,000+ employees, even if they went up to 20:1 on span/control, you still have thousands of management positions. There would be jobs to be had, just less of them and more competition for them.

Not saying it won't/can't happen, but who says we're going to 10?

And there is the downside for anyone with under 15 years experience....
