Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

WF so broke, won't cover office supplies?

Paid for my own desk, monitor, headset, laptop case, etc. No problem.

But WF is so cheap it won't pay for printer ink and paper? How ridiculous is this, when company knows we can't get basic office supplies in our offices?

Proof company is going under if it can't provide basic work supplies to its employees.

  1. s. Don't tell me that it's a minor cost or that it's worth the commute savings. Minor is relative, and that's not the point. Look at what other companies are doing to support their staff, NOT the scarcity principle we've been steeping in for far too long.

Other companies giving employees up to $7000 to set up home offices.

Not joking at all. I paid for and buy broadband, have two computers, two monitors, a printer, paid for my desk, 10 year old keyboard and mouse, like you, Two computers in case one goes down, 4 years and eight old years old. Old PCs are dirt cheap and perfectly suitable for remoting in.

With all the money you’re saving working at home you oughta pony up some cash. COVID shouldn’t be a complete windfall for you... buy some equipment.

You're joking right? If you get the bare minimum you're doing fine. I ended up buying my own keyboard b/c the one I had was like 10 years old and they wouldn't spring for anything but the c-appiest keyboard you get when you buy a computer. Same with mouse. At home I use my own monitor, own broadband and everything else. It's probably mixed, but in many cases you're on your own.

@2tsd+18o9RKRx. Heat/electric bills have gone up... it’s referred to as Winter. We all have far less costs in food and commute plus vastly increased personal time... at least 10 extra hours and $50 savings on average from losing the commute alone. I know that I work longer hours and am happy to do so with no commuter costs. One must work quite hard to find a cloud in the silver lining.

Now if you were going stir crazy working home alone never seeing people due to COVID and getting depressed, that would be a real problem. But extra time and clear monetary savings are not problems at all.

I received a little Dell docking station, mouse, headset, and keyboard. I was surprised I didn't even get a $60 travel monitor, but I had a monitor on hand to use already so not worried about it. I was oddly touched by the dock after everything I've been through this year. I held it up and cried like I found water in the desert. I figured it was a nice $20 piece of forethought, turns out they're around $175. There's a request page in teamworks for desk chairs with two approved models to choose from btw - anyone with need just talk to your people manager. I kept the chair from my old company that severed me, ahah.

Printing is allowed for my role. Sorry ill-informed colleagues, but you're wrong.

FYI, not everyone saw a great savings. I don’t drive and my bus trip is $5 round trip (Four something with prepay discount). I believe my AC/heat/electric bills have gone up by more than that or is at least a wash since i’m at home all the time now.

Other than transportation, I’m not sure what other expense i would be saving. Lunch? Usually bring one from home, so those are the same. Clothing? Maybe but that’s a stretch. Time commuting? Definitely saving that now.

I’m sensing a great problem with an overly entitled workforce. With all of the cost savings of working at home I’m amazed at these complaints. I hate to say it but this entitlement mentality here really indicates the need for new blood in the organization.

No one else is responsible for furnishing your house. As far as printing goes, it's typically not authorized for employees to print at home but if your position is approved to do it you should be able to get an exception to the policy. If they won't approve such an exception, just stop printing. If it's important to the company for you to print stuff at home, that exception will come in eventually.

We used to pick up paper clips from the sidewalks for our supplies and steal pens from hotels. Better get used to it.

We don’t even get office supplies in the office anymore, so why would you expect anything? I paid for my own home office equipment except for the WF laptop. Soon they will take that too when they force VDI on us.

Typical representation of WF culture. Most respondents on this thread are arseholes. I can't wait to turn in my notice next week.

WF either attracts people without compassion or turns them into people without it. OP had valid question and was treated like c-app by most. Maybe try treating people with kindness for a change.

Not sure why you all are so upset about this. They sent someone out to help setup my sit/stand desk earlier in the year. Also got a sweet dual monitor setup with docking station and a nice plantronics savi headset.

We are all saving hours of commuting time each week. We are all saving on gas and tolls. We are all saving by eating at home instead of cafeteria. The least we can do is to supply our own paper and printer ink. Really we don’t even need to print... get comfortable with digital.

Very, very few companies are giving employees money to set up home offices. Let alone $7K.

If you can find one that is doing that is there a reason you're not moving to that company?

Wouldn't approve notebook purchases on my team. Such B.S. I think mgrs are subjectively approving for some and denying for others. Tired of the craap.

go to the covid-19 resource page on teamworks then from there you can go to working from home and then working from home expense reimbursement. it explicitly states that it is oue intention that employees won't incur additional expenses while working from home and provides a list of expenses eligible for reimbursement. it also provides instructions on how to request reimbursement. if your manager won't approve it then take it up the chain.

Post ID: @hoh+18o9RKRx I am not the OP, but WFC is a large organization, and not every LOB and position operates exactly like yours. The further Wells Fargo’s technology falls behind: the more we have to print for record keeping purposes, manager sign offs, corrections and on and on.

We have people in our department who have to print while WFH for whatever reason. However, they have limited access to confidential info, though I would never trust that at Wells.

Our employees have been told to save receipts.

  1. You cant connect your own printer to your laptop. Been like that for years... You think they want you printing confidential info at home? And why would you need to print at home anyhow?
  1. The cell thing has been announced and people have been phasing out of it over the last year. They claim other companies already do this, so its an easy expense for them to shift the burden.

Your manager is probably afraid to approve for expenses for fear of being criticized for over-spending in times of layoffs. Right now every dept is trying to keep expenses as low as possible and stay off Finance/HR radar. I had a manager who would pay out of his own pocket for office supplies just to keep the dept expenses low. Not ideal but play along with it for now until things get better.

Also see if you can go to the office briefly to raid the supplies cabinet. I used to work for a company where Managers would be fired for trivial reasons but the real reason was overspending.

I know because I used to have to monitor company expenses. It could be a blessing to work for a "cheap manager."

You didn’t pay for your own desk monitor etc. Those are furnishings you already had. That is why wells is not buying you home furnishings. Now on to the printer ink issue. Wells has already said you should not be printing any documents at home so why are you? We have set up a printing hub to secure documents for our customers safety so stop putting us at risk there should be no printer needs. There you have it now stop being a baby.

Your manager should be signing off on home office supply purchases for you. I do for my team. If that's not happening, you have an awful manager. It's a basic, fair request, and it's the least we can do for employees during this time. I'm sorry to hear this is going on in the company.
