If I were Charlie Scharf, and I just got paid $36,000,000 to turn the Wells Fargo brand around, I would prioritize educating employees about exactly what Wells Fargo did wrong and how we are changing the company to be better. Be a leader and set a precedent that other banks will want to follow. I would love to put together the program:
- List each separate case of fraud or wrong-doing.
- Examine how erroneous decisions/strategies led to the occurrence.
- Determine what circumstances allowed it to continue without discovery.
- What changes are we making to prevent each problem from happening again.
- Take suggestions from employees as to how to tighten down the hatches.
- Drive home to each and every Executive, Director, Manager and Employee that none of the behaviors and attitudes that led to these failures will be tolerated from this day forward.
Unless this happens, we will keep finding new ways to make the same old mistakes. Set the right example from the top. Everything else is just smoke and mirrors to distract and mislead shareholders and regulators.
