Can I request to be laid off? I'm in my 50s and ready to retire anyways

Say nothing to management. Instead, focus on gaining a reputation of being "old and worthless". But keep up the appearance of having a good attitude. Then when they decide to get rid of you, they'll offer you a package just to make themselves feel less guilty.

Seriously? Uhh, assuming the OP is not a troll but just clueless about ohh, about 95% of office politics, YES, it would be a foolish request. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Have you worked here forever? I mean, this should not even be a question — it's more like some character on the Office –( i.e., this is a Kevin question).

"He was not let go, but he was bullied and harassed into quitting. A two-fer for management. Two terminations for the price of one."

If this actually happened at all, the guy should be fine after the lawsuit.

More importantly what this tells the reader is that you need to be thoughtful when you talk about this. Dropping subtle hints may be more effective and less risky than blurting out 'fire me please, I'm ready to retire!' on the next conference call.

I’m one who has seen requesting a layoff blow up in the employee’s face. When marketing did layoffs a person near retirement age asked to be let go. He was ready to leave, and wanted to save a younger person’s job.

He was not let go, but he was bullied and harassed into quitting. A two-fer for management. Two terminations for the price of one.

Once they know you want to leave they will not give you a package, but they will do all they can to hurry you out the door.

Don’t risk it unless you are ready to quit if it doesn’t work. In that case, sure, why not, you have nothing to lose.

Exactly, they don’t have a volunteer process, but talk to your management about your plans and thoughts. I know someone who was going to retire in the next year, talked to their management, and when cuts had to happen in their group, they were asked if they wanted a package. Win/win for the team. That was in November/December this year.

No, wf doesn’t do voluntary retirement layoffs.. in fact I’ve seen more people who have said they told their manager they’d like to get laid off and would just retire and then not get laid off while a younger/newer employee on the team was. They’re typically laying people off due to performance and or value.

Why not ask your manager?

No, but I suppose you could always let it be known that you're ready to retire in the near future. If your manager has to make a tough decision about who to keep and who to let go, you'd probably be more likely to be offered a package.
