I just need to know what I'm facing here. How much trouble am I in after being put on a PIP? Is it a guaranteed firing and they're just covering their bases or do I truly have a chance to still come out of it with a job if my numbers improve? I'd like to know so I can plan for the future appropriately.

Someone tried this pip BS on me. I stopped her right in her tracks, ended the meeting and called the group VP and said WTF?, I'm done give me a package, I'll be out by the end of the week. One more white man out the door. Check!
They asked me to stay for another six months, then a year...
Sometimes you have to call BS, particularly since there are so many DEI promoted Directors and senior managers with no clue.
@Mcoz you have zero compassion. Don’t you understand that PIP is usually retaliation or involves other reasons, such as freeing up space for a favorite? Why people with worst performance are not put on PIP??? When PIP was really fair?

It is obvious VZ would rather PIP sales out than offer the standard RIF. The unrealistic targets are a joke. Personally I am going to find another job on VZ time rather than develop your stupid plan for getting off PIP. You want us gone so don't cry when we take our customers with us.

Hire your replacements at 1/3 the salary and see how it works our long term. My customers have already told me they are leaving VZ also.
Best to go to a job you will be happy in. Once they put you on a PIP, they never let go. I have seen too many people try to get off PIP, only to be miserable, and end up at a new job they enjoy. Good luck.

I’ve managed people who were on a PIP and successfully completed them. It’s possible.
Some years back it used to be about a 2 year process from the initial notice to the actual termination if it came to that. Some people used to talk about PIPs as being on a "2 minute warning".

If you are on a PIP not only is your Manager and Director involved. HR is also to be sure your Manager has all their paperwork in order to support you being released from employment. Usually a PIP is the last step to the door since if you were able to meet your metrics you already would be. Good luck. But dont be surprised.
Go out on stress leave under FMLA. While on leave, find another job. If you don't want to do that, start looking for another job. If they fire you for performance, under PIP, you may qualify for unemployment by stating you did your job to the best of your ability....this works if you were employed over several years. I was on a PIP in 2017. I made it off in mid 2018. PIPs are Verizon's way of getting higher paid employees out. I took the sweetheart deal in March 2019. PIPs are way more serious now than 5 years ago. Good luck.
Depends on your Manager and your Managers' Director. If you have a good relationship with your Manager and you show you are trying, you may be able to eeck out a save. But the Director could force the Manager to cut you loose. Just be a model employee for a while and hope your Manager isn't promoted or re-orged, or you may have to start it all over again with the new Manager who may not care. Good Luck to you!
In a normal company yes, in Verizon it depends on who’s boots you’re licking.
If you’re on a PIP that means you’re in the chute for the next RIF. If enough managers like you and come to your defense during stack ranking you may have a 1-2% chance of making it through. Update your resume, get active on LinkedIn, pick up some certs with your remaining time (pmp, ccna, etc), start doing mock interviews if you’re rusty. Get ahead of it, odds are not in your favor.
Union just don’t break the rules and you’ll be fine.
Non -union. If you know your manager truely wants you to improve and works with you on it you may survive. Otherwise take this time to look while you have a job since that makes it easier when you apply.

If you are union just go on disability. You can survive for years that way. I think 3/4 of the union work force is currently on it.

i survived PIP by a thread. it’s difficult especially if management has it out for you. the odds are undoubtedly stacked against you — management, quotas, metrics, etc. — i suggest you ride it out as long as possible, delay the inevitable by trying to hit your numbers for at least 2 consecutive months so you aren’t moving forward in the PIP process every month. i was on PIP for over a year, no exaggeration, and there were many times i thought i wouldn’t make it. good luck to you.
