Way to kick me in the teeth. Just had my 20th anniversary. They said I could choose a gift...WF cuff links, money clip, necklaces (all with WF charms or engravings) or....a freaking STUFFED PONY. It's humiliating, I used to be proud to work here and worked long hours and they offer me a mini stuffed animal.

Only stayed more than 5 years in one company, all others were a stepping stone to something better. Every move resulted in more skills, greater responsibilities and more money. After 12 years I have a paid for house and zero debt.
Can you articulate exactly what marketable skills you can gain by moving laterally on a company that has outdated technology and processes and lags behind its peers? What value it created and for whom exactly?
I do not see complacency as a virtue.

Oh joy, the replies to this by the immature, unable to hold a job for more than 15 months at a pop living at home with mommy or in a 2 bedroom with three roommates. Lacking skills to get a promotion or obtain an internal posting to a new job because they want to move up three rungs at a time and would never consider a lateral move to obtain new skills.
"Ok boomer" is the best they have for a come back. The whole 'didn't you get paid for that 20 years' retort is just grand. Yes he/she did. He/she also gave unpaid hours over that time. Stuck through with the lean times and tried their best to make things better so young snots had a company to get a job at to start a career.
The point is, if the 'firm' cannot provide a respectable form of acknowledgement for 20 years of service it would have been better to not do anything than a cheap trinket. That includes those stupid cubes.

I lost two jobs in that time. Pounding the pavement, scared to death while you were still employed here earning a paycheck, maintaining health insurance benefits and 401k .
I'm scared to death again that I might lose my job and you're hollering about trinkets. You weren't forced to stay twenty years. You chose to. You ought to thank your God upstairs that you were blessed with that tenure. Things can get a lot worse. Remember, we're in Covid. Be happy they offered you something.
There was a time when tenure meant something - back in the 1800’s when my great-great-great grandparents worked. Now it signals complacency. It is employment at will in most states. We are not union workers. Scr3w the trinkets. I’ll take a raise and more PTO over some dumb acrylic cube or pin.
Did you get paid for those 20 years? Did you get a 401k match during those 20 years? Health care? Paid holidays and other PTO? Toughen up buttercup.
I understand as many years ago I worked for B of A they use to send you a catalog of Items you could pick out. They had things like wall art, BBQ grills , lamp things you could use and appreciate it also shows they appreciated you also.

For my 20th anniversary I got an acrylic cube, no option.
Clearly the best reward for making it to 20 years is an additional 2 weeks of severance, brining your total to 10 months plus 60 days notice , making it a full year paid with healthcare. Boom!

Looks like they will be last 2 weeks of October. Someone posted that the company set aside $700 MM for severance so I am guessing that will be 20-30k people gone during this period. Likely be most of us.
The managers are trying to get people to quit on their own dime. I do have another offer now not sure the severance package would even be worth waiting for and the type of work here is career ending. I think its like $800 or some nominal dollar amount.
Hope the managers know once employees are gone they are next, so they are doing the dirty work for the CEO so he looks good then they will fire you too! SOunds like a pretty bad deal for sure.
Even with all that to think about, the bigger issue is the tech here s—s! I had to downplay working here to get a new role. Companies were like who still does things that way? Are they in 2020? Do they know what the tech today can do? Good thing is i havent been here that long so was able to recover and get an offer. I just let these places know they are set in their ways and love to do things the old 1900's way. For me, I need to move to a company using current technology or my career will be over by working here, career ending tech job - if you call it that.
Maybe they want you to quit.

Randomly ran across this post when searching for new posts. I'm a young person and at my first corp job, when I recently hit my 5 year, they gave me a $100 gift card to my choice out of like 30 retailers/restaurants. Not trying to show off or anything, but just trying to give a comparison.
Personally out of those I'd choose the money clip. Always wanted one but don't use cash enough and if I did, I'd still be OK with it since it's concealed almost always.

OP here. What do the layoffs, people dying, no food, have to do with that sh*tty token gift for 20 years of service? They could show employees some dignity and give them a gift card or decent token gift.
That’s the reason why I laugh at those who still attempt to assign a negative label to those who works in multiple companies with increased responsibilities and compensation. Thanks for providing additional evidence that staying long term with the same company is rarely worth it.
I would take the pony! They are cute, and you can always find a child who would like it and play with it. So you are spreading a little joy in the world, and that is always a good thing.

20 years in, but you did that to benefit yourself, not the company.
In other words, you've already been paid (every two weeks) what you're owed.
Literally anything you're given or offered for showing up to work everyday (again, for your own benefit) is gravy.
