Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Two Week Notice

Do I tell my manager over the phone or via email?
Worst manager I’ve ever had - why I’m leaving - but not looking forward to telling her. Prefer email but good chance she’d deny getting it. Yes- she’s that bad.

Call manager to give 2 weeks notice. Thank her for the support. State you have a good opportunity that you cannot pass up. Leave it at that.

Then follow up with a nice letter via email that is signed. Dear XXX, I am giving you 2 weeks notice because I have been offered another position at another firm. My last day with Wells Fargo is 11/12/20 (yes, state the date because managers s— at using a calendar).

I wish to thank you for the support you have given me the past years and I have learned a lot from you. I will leave my laptop, keys, badge with XXX.

Then email it. Go to sent items to print a copy. You can copy yourself but use your wells email. No need for read or delivery receipt. Then stay classy. Go into time tracker and print your PTO balance. Remember, the PTO for nov and dec hasn’t been earned yet. If your last day Is nov 1, you are deemed to have earned it.

When workday gets up and running you'll be able to upload your letter and enter your resignation day. Never having to rely on managers to do it for you.

Be sure to send an email so there's a paper trail. If your manager is as horrible as you say they could easily take a verbal notice and claim you just failed to show up.

Come on folks! Why is this even a question?

You call your boss and tell him/her. If we were in the office you would meet with them.

Follow up with a signed letter stating your resignation and date. Scan and e-mail it.

Oh yes, one more thing just came to mind. Not sure of your role at WF, but if you'll need to transition work to someone else you'll need to meet with the boss anyway to discuss – and that's when a nasty boss can really be a pain in the backside. In your follow-up note, if it makes sense, maybe offer to start pulling together the status of all your work to help with the transition. It's a win/win – you look like a professional superstar, and you get to offer it before the boss demands it. (Very satisfying.) And it might reduce the amount of time you have to spend with him/her discussing hand offs etc.

It's a tough pill to swallow but I highly recommend phone, followed by an email to thank your boss for their support, wish them luck etc. Keep it positive but vague about where you are going – which will also help keep it brief. This is when you want to be classy and take the high road. Don't give the boss anything to criticize you for on the way out. You may not feel like you need your boss as a reference, but no sense in making it easy for him/her to bad mouth you to people you may cross paths with again.

If you reach out to set up a meeting, and the boss blows you off like, "I can't meet until next week" or something obnoxious, just say in your note that you had hoped to do it by phone but you understand that he/she is incredibly busy right now. (Legit, most managers are scrambling to complete their annual reviews at the moment so...)

Speaking personally, I'm often a bit underwhelmed by how broken up my boss is when I resign. It's never as big a deal as I think it'll be. You're a professional, you've got this.

Good luck on your next chapter, and congrats!

Your manager may be same as mine, very bad one!

Anyways i have a few offers that are much better than here, but thats not hard since Tech is obsolete here and is a job ending career. Good news is i havent been here for decades so i am still able to use jobs previous to this one as the focus for new jobs.

I have to put mine in, not sure i may wait to see if i get my rating in next week, will see how it goes.

I forgot to mention make sure you use a read and delivery receipt, as well as copy your personal address. You will find the first 2 options by clicking options at the top of your message. You may have to hit more options to see. Very easily found by Googling if you need assistance.

Do a video conference over Skype and following-up with an E-mail. Preferably an attachment and scanned with your signature. Be professional, the world is too small to burn bridges.

Just call her and be nice. Then follow up with a courtesy email. Be professional. You'll never know when you will need a recommendation from her or run into her at a new job. When economy recovers, there may be some great openings at WF you may wish to apply for. You never know. If she gets mean about it, then that would be on her. I am pretty sure she will be nice about it. A lot of toxic managers are strange like that.

Admin Assistant here. I key all of my departments terms. I would call to tell her that you are sending her an email with your formal resignation. In most states (if not all) final pay is required within a certain time period of your last day. Look up the laws specific to your state. If she doesn’t key the term and your final pay is issued late, you will receive what’s referred to as penalty pay.

@zzb+17rNiL1f, people are suggesting the poster copy HR or the 2-up manager because the manager is not above claiming the poster never gave notice. It's just a way of making sure that doesn't happen.

I dream of sending an email saying ‘here is my 2 weeks notice, 2 weeks late’. I wouldn’t do this to my manager though, he is a terrific guy. But hate what WF has become and would love to somehow stick it to them. Anyway, just email her and include her manager too.

It’s not your fault if the mgr doesn’t read email. Make sure to copy your personal address as well.

There's no point in telling HR. The HR department doesn't work to protect the employees. They are there to protect the company and shareholders.

Email her and also her manager (your 2-up). If she is really the worst manager you ever had, why bother with a two week notice? Why not just tell them you are resigning immediately. The two week notice only benefits the manager, not the employee.

If she doesn't read emails then tell her on the phone. Then send an email to her and cc HR. Done.

Email is key, you need to have it in writing of some form.

Either way is fine for the initial notice. If you deliver notice verbally, send a follow-up e-mail. I'm not really sure why everyone so far is suggesting copying ER, FedExing your resignation, etc. People quit all the time, just another day on the job for a manager.

Fax or email a copy to HR

Send an email and copy your ER rep. If you don’t know who it is you can look it up on teamworks.

Both, but email is the important channel. Use the additional measures others suggest. If she were working in a WF office, I’d suggest also sending your notice via registered/certified US mail (I always have to look up the difference) or FedEx.
