What does it mean if you get a below “meet” rating? If this a way to lay people off (those who get “inconsistent meet” or “need improvement”?

We were told that meets is a good rating and even mean you go beyond. If you go beyond, that is exceeds in regular English, but not here apparently.

Chase played that game. You only got exceeds if you were fortunate enough to get promoted. Go figure that now is the case here.

@1vh In reality, there is a big push to force this distribution on A LOT of people. And without data/strong review being a factor. It’s arbitrary downgrades to meet a quota. Like almost everything at WF, it’s poorly rolled out and communicated thus inconsistent across businesses. This is classic wheel-less stagecoach. Buckle up HR/ER, you will be dealing with thousands of new cases of employee complaints when people just in July were rated differently.

I can confirm that my team was not mandated to follow those guidelines. Guess your LOB s—s

@1vh you obviously are not a manager. It is not a guideline it is a mandate and it has nothing to do with a manager valuing a person. my manager's manager IM'd me and like that I was TOLD that I had to lower all of my team to a 3. No one asked what my team did, no one READ my very well documented reviews. It was all about numbers and the big boss was told he had X amount and that I needed to figure out how to keep my team moral up and getting great results with mediocre ratings.

So you can proclaim they are not set in stone but I was told if I would not lower them then they would do it. I am the new Miss Cleo and I am seeing the end of January having HR back pedaling on why ratings made no sense.

I myself will be embracing candor and explaining that I rated them an X but it was downgraded.

There is no association with 1-5 and needs improvement to exceeds. This new way forces managers to stop giving everyone rave reviews when they really did not give a pure look at performance. Of course managers want everyone to look at their team as needs or exceeds because they themselves look good. The % are guidelines, not forced. Exceptions are allowed. If you are a manager who settled for your employee getting needs improvement because you felt they should have been rated higher, then you failed arguing your point and standing behind your employee.

Try looking around on Teamworks. They've put out materials defining the review ratings, the process, and the changes in methodology from the past. Essentially, WF was handing out too many high ratings where it became difficult to highlight true outstanding performers. The grading should fit a standard deviation curve.

This happens to any company on a 10-20 year cycle. They get stricter on performance reviews and they gradually loosen as managers continue to push for their people. It reaches a breaking point where the company clamps down on ratings again. I haven't been at WF for 20 years but anecdotally, I've heard that this is the pattern we've followed as well.

the ratings stuff has been posted here multiple times. there is a bell curve and people are being downgraded to fit the curve.

5 Consistently exceeds (5%)
performance outcomes consistently exceed most or all expectations
Words to use in write up: Exceptional, role model, takes ownership, extraordinary, outstanding, excellent, sets the bar. Consistently exceeded expectations in all objectives

4 Exceeds (15%)
performance outcomes consistently met and exceeded in some expectations.
Words to use in write up: always proactively, initiates, often exceeds, stands out.

  • met all objectives and deliverables, exceeding expectations in some areas

3 Meets (60%)
performance outcomes consistently met expectations
Words to use in write up: willing, open to, consistently, effectively, dependable, on par

  • overall objectives were met consistently

2 Inconsistently Meets (15%)
performance outcomes inconsistently met expectations
Words to use in write up: sometimes, inconsistently, occasionally, ineffectively, inefficiently

  • some objectives or deliverables have inconsistent outcomes
  • performance outcomes are not sometimes met, but not always

1 Needs Improvement (5%)
performance outcomes are significantly below expectations; critical objective failures

  • unsatisfactory outcomes are consistent across all objectives
  • critical deliverables or timelines were missed consistently across multiple objectives

It is going to be difficult for many to get a 3 Meets, so count on people getting downgraded.

What do the numbers mean? No one is answering my question.
What is a 1? Is that below?
What is a two? Is that also below?
What is three? Meets?
Four, exceeds?
Thank you.

Will there be an HR case uproar in January when likely thousands across the company are suddenly downgraded to meets from exceeds in just two months despite no change to their performance in a negative way? How will this be justified?

Wells has moved to forced ranking this year. Last few years prior they performing or not performing, now back again to the tiered ranking. But.....this year is is a forced ranking. In other words only a few consistently exceeds, the a few more exceeds, the the majority meets, and so on. It is BS.....quite unfortunate for those that will get cheated by this move.

It is meaningless. A meets is a huge spectrum between barely a pulse to extraordinary. With the forced ranking that are supposedly not real but are real almost everyone is meets. My group was told that we had 5 Exceeds to be available for 42 people. In July we were allocated 11 so obviously someone up the chain allocated more for another team.

I had 2 Exceeds in July and now I have to explain to one of them that despite doing even a better job than in July they will be downgraded.

I have decided that I will only be giving out meets from no on because it is meaningless and stupid. Embrace candor ha ha. This place is so corrupt. I also was an Exceeds in July - I told my manger to give me a Meets

If you meet expectations, then that means you met expectations.

But if you didn't meet expectations, then that means you didn't meet expectations.

You know?
