Who is making the decision on who stays and who gets laid off for Spans and Layers? Is it solely HR? Is it your direct manager? Is it the 2, 3, 4, 5 down manager from CEO? How have they managed to keep who is going to be impacted so quiet? My manager claims to know nothing about spans and layers, yet it seems we are at the 11th hour before the shoe drops.

In my org, the decision makers are 3-down from the CEO with sign off from the 2-down.
No it’s typically re-org a couple times and drop some of the middle management until they get the ratio they want. At least that is what we’ve been going thru.
Since they seem to want 7 layers down from CEO, Are they laying off all managers that make up the 8th layer down from CEO?
In our org it’s happening 3-4 levels above the typical individual contributor. So first and even second level managers don’t know much.
i want to find a job i really want; i think this place even if you stay is not going to be good for a career and for moving up. Ill take my time to find right job , but i doubt it will take too long, worst case is i find something after the holidays.
The flying fart has a very good point , save save save. There will be no logic in these layoffs.
Depends on your area. Could be your direct manager, two up, or three up who ultimately makes the call. HR is always involved in lay off decisions. A manager can’t actually lay off someone in the system without HR taking action to change their status.
You need at least 7 direct reports. Per this article:

I’ve played a role in move the lines projects, HR does not have a clue. I’ve recently been re-ogred, management and HR don’t have a clue what individuals are working on. None of these decisions are based on facts or logic.
Often, the simplest explanation is the right one, in this case it is that people in charge don’t have a clue, it is literally a three ring circus in every part of the company.
I don’t give a flying fart if I get laid off, I prepared and saved. I’m just watching the clown show to see what happens next.
