Access to building is terminated the day you are notified. They will not let you back to retrieve. Someone will pack up your things and ship them to you. So good luck with getting everything back.

Just go in and get your cr@p. Ask permission later. Your access will be cut off when the shoe drops. You’ll then have to wait for someone to send it back to you once they rummage through it and try to separate work stuff from your personal stuff. In today’s uncertain world we don’t need to keep anything personal at the workplace.
I hope they send me my 2020 Chinese Zodiac calendar that i barely got to use.

Who would willingly go into the office to retrieve their stuff, when someone will ship it to you if you get laid off? I imagine a thick layer of dust covering everything and covid wafting through the vents. Not a healthy place to be.
I never leave anything personal in the office. Anything. So I am good.
I just want the pictures on my desk back. The only other "personal" thing left in my cube is my Wells Fargo notebook with company information, the names of friends at Wells Fargo and their family members names, etc. The pictures are out on the desk. The Wells Fargo notebook is locked up with all of the office supplies that I used when I came into the office, rather than taking them home while telecommuting. In the locked office desk are the pack of mouse batteries that surely must be stale by now. The few pens, paper, paper clips, stapler, tape, head set, and all that other "office stuff" that I did not take home with me although I had been working remotely for quite a while.
I think you always are permitted to retrieve your personal items and clear out your desk and surrounding area. I am not sure if something has changed, but that is how it used to be.
Also, am I permitted to go into the office to get some items off of my desk? I am still working and have been at home working since COVID-19. Do I need to ask permission from my manager to visit the office?
I left WF early this summer (on my own accord). They refused to let me pick up my stuff. So I’ve been gone for a few months now and any personal items are still sitting on my desk.
It wasn’t a big deal but now nearly all of my friends have left as well and the admins were laid off. So Im just assuming anything at my desk won’t be returned to me.
Which seems very on brand for WF.
what OP says is true. if displaced you instantly lose access and a third party vendor will pack and ship your personal items from your office.
@wy1 - OP didn't say to use possible pending layoff as justification to manager. The justification is that you have some personal property that you would like to retrieve.
Depending on where you are in the bank, your management may be more or less amenable. I just went through a "move the lines" event where I now report into a different OC member. Prior OC was that any/all requests had to go up to the OC member and there was very stringent criteria about what would even be considered... and "I want to retrieve some personal items" wasn't on that list - so don't bother asking. Current OC member has pushed approval down to different level and current exec who can authorize is more humane about granting requests.

I hope someone doesn’t steal my 5, 10, 15, 20 , 25, 30, and 35 years of service cubes. And my old TOG gold coins. And my golden spoke plaque. And my few wf coffee mugs and bookmarks and my jack the dog stuff animal.
I have never kept anything at work I wouldn’t mind losing if the place caught fire.
I took most everything home a long time ago. I felt that with the uncertainty we are in, why keep things there. After all, its workspace, not your house. I was fine with having very minimal items in my area.
Unless you are fired, you have 60 days.
I doubt your manager is going to steal your mug. If something's missing it's probably one of the people who have been working onsite having free reign to go through people's stuff all these months.
you still need your manager's permission to go into an office location if you've been asked to be remote. Don't risk just going in to get personal belongings.
So we can't get into the office without a managers approval and your idea is to ask for approval using your possible pending layoff as a justification?
With thinking like that, your fears be might actually be justified.
