Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Retail vs. Telesales

Retail Rep here. Been with Verizon about 18 months. Worked Telesales WFH for about 4 months this spring, now back at the store. Got offered a permanent Telesales position. Still trying to decide on wish is the better career move over the long term. Anyone wanna chime in about which is better career-wise in the long term (5-10 years)? Which is easier to get promoted up the ranks? Telesales pays about $5000 more in commission per year than retail if you can hit the numbers. Single male, mid-thirties, just bought a house, owe $10k for car, $10k for student loans, 20min drive to work... if any of that makes a difference in your answer.

My other concerns are:

Lack of social interaction from co-workers physically next to you in telesales.

It gets old repeating the same stuff over and over for 8hrs every day.

There's no variety in the transactions. It's always sales. Everything else is a transfer. Good for the money, bad for variety. How long till doing the exact same thing over and over gets so old you can't stand it?

Hourly increased slightly. No drop in hourly

Two coworkers where offer the telesales position took what they were giving for the increase. One got dropped 5k and the other 7k from hourly. They do make almost twice in commission but still make 3k less after everything is said and done. The f up part is that if they want to go back to retail, they just forfeited their 5k and 7k increase. But if they stay in telesales, they can multiply and make more money at the end of the year. Pros and cons

Just got a call from telesales . Hourly did drop, there is no way they are going to increase your pay and comission at risk

@3yqy+17dGg6pl You are incorrect. The hourly pay increase is not changed if you go into telesales. I know 3 reps who took the telesales jobs and hourly did not drop. What did change is no time + for working on Sunday’s. Also once all those new hires start hitting the phones it will be a lot less busy. Covid has made it like Black Friday everyday but now since hundreds being added this will dramatically decrease as well as making a decent check. Everyone going to telesales thinks it’s this great pot of gold and they will make what they did in the retail store before covid. HA!

Sometimes it’s not all about the money and there is no guarantee what you will make in telesales. The change is pretty drastic going from a retail store to working from home....pre covid anyway.

It’s a huge difference working from home and retail . For one you have more downtime at the store, can be on your phone take long bathroom breaks. Interaction with co workers. I feel when you work from home telesales there will be no downtime, very little bathroom breaks. You will litterly be stuck in a chair all day, no exercise, at least in the store you get to walk around all day. It would be a huge change, not to mention the hourly pay that you just got will go away . If you don’t mind talking over the phone being stuck in a chair for 8 hrs a day go for it .

Overheard one of my co workers say during her interview that hours for telesales will be beginning 2-11pm for 6 months then depending on performance you can TRY to go for the cush 8-5 shift but good luck with that. Most of the high performers have that shift. Also it’s back to back calls so there’s not much downtime. Was told from her interview that it’s literally like Black Friday weekend all day, everyday. Think about that.

I’m advising to stay in telesales. Better money at a time when you need it. The stores are always iffy about closing. You may enjoy your co-workers until you get stuck with some bad ones.
Less clothes budget, lunch budget, less commute time, less money on gas, etc.
If you can arrange for yourself to work from home with a changing outside view, like a street, it helps with the repetitious nature of the work.

I worked at Verizon close to 16 years before I was laid off a year ago. I started my career in retail and left the retail channel for different positions based out of Bellevue. I worked in retail for about 4-5 years.
I can tell you this, get the f— out of retail. Their plan is to close as many retail company owned locations as possible and go 3rd party premium indirect. The cost of acquisition is way less, plus the nps scores are nearly identical. On top of that Verizon has literally no risk when a agent opens a location. It’s on them.
Over the years it’s clear vzw has been pushing business online and premium retail. For one I was a part of those conversations plus I helped grow the premium dealers bringing in new partners to the West Area some 6-7 years ago. Verizon has made the reps sign up as many customers for my vzw as possible and at one point writing them up when they didn’t do a good enough job.
My suggestion is this...have them pay for your school and do telesales wfh. Use that extra time that your not commuting working b—s— retail hours to further your education at Verizon’s expense. A old director who was laid off years ago told me this “ this company doesn’t care about you, but the people around you do”. It was so true. And if any of my old friends/peers from work read this post they will know who I am bc I said that all the time. They have been working on the culture which is well and nice...but Google how many ppl vzw has laid off over the last 6 years..anyway if I haven’t made it clear enough get the hell out of retail. It’s a dead end

I think stores will bounce back after covid and telesales will shrink after Covid. The pendulum has swung to telesales for now but it will swing back to the stores. If you enjoy getting out of the house and the friendships you have in store. Then the stores are where it is at.

I mean telesales as a channel has been going, even more so now with covid. Retail has made cuts every year the past 3 years. So unless your going to get into sm role and eventually a GM role retail doesn’t make sense. Working in any sort of work from home over the phone will open more doors for you. For instance there are probably 10 different ops jobs that are work from home supporting either telesales or customer service. Also there is customer service gigs.

So I think it’ll get your great cross channel experience.
