Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Stress Leave

This probably has been covered before, but anyone out there taken a stress leave before? I am assuming this is zero pay, or do you qualify for something if you go to doctor? Do you need to go in to see a doctor or can you just call the leave admistrator? Or manager? I am a single parent, WFH and distance learning for my kids not by choice. I am at my breaking point and can't afford to just quit my job, but can't continue on this way either. There appears to be no end in sight. Please I do not need sarcastic remarks, unless you are in this situation with your kids you have absolutely no idea. Looking for advice.

To apply for short term disability ( which is paid), you will need to call Lincoln Financial which administers the STD for WF. You will have to provide medical documentation from your medical /mental health provider to Lincoln to justify the request for leave. Take care of yourself and taking a medical leave is a good option

mla provides no protection against layoffs.

What's important is that you get the time to pick yourself up and evaluate what needs to change to improve your situation to the point of where it doesn't have such intense impact. I am a single parent too and dealing with school closures affecting my children. It is a lot to deal with. I adjusted my expectations and decided not to let a lot of things bother me anymore. It is what it is and I am not going to sacrifice my health because of dealing with things I have no control of. It helps very much to take an inventory of these things and 'let them go' so that they could be approached from the "I don't give a sh–' vantage point, which has been my saviour. I work so that the bills are paid, take care of all the family logistics, chores, and will make quality time with my kids above anything that schools continue to pester over. If they want better results, they have to open up to at least hybrid model. I have 'special' kids that are not neurotypical and they don't enjoy this remote way of education to say the least.

Don't feel bad about sick leave, you have to do what you have to do. Just like they remind us on the plane, safety procedures require that you put your own oxygen mask on first so that you can take care of others. Hugs.

Fmla provides no protection against layoffs. That is misinformation

Employers can and will layoff employees on FMLA

It has already occurred at wf

Here’s something that might suit you better..
FMLA will protect your job, but you’ll need to get a medical opinion from a doctor (psychiatrist).
But importantly, you can ask for “intermittent leave” allowing you to check out when stressed.
I’m not sure if it’s paid, but it saves you from taking blocks of time, then having to reapply.

To clarify- FMLA protects your job but it is NOT paid. The only way you get paid while you are off work is if you qualify for short term disability (std) which means you apply for this through a Lincoln Financial. Your medical/mental health provider need to submit documentation to Lincoln stating that you are not able to work. Then Lincoln would approve STD which allows you to be paid.

You have to be under the care of a Doctor or Mental Health Professional. The caveat is that your provider MUST provide compelling documentation to Lincoln Financial for you to qualify for STD.

I did this earlier this year. My doctor said I was a mess and basically told me I HAD to take time off work or she was going to refer me to in-patient treatment to get myself in order. She wanted to start me on meds but didn’t want me working while adjusting to them because each med can cause crazy side effects. So I applied for and was approved for STD. Initially it was only supposed to be for 2 weeks. But the meds didn’t help so she wanted me to go to a psychiatrist because they are more versed in those type of meds. So I did and it took 6 more weeks (8 total) to get me to a place where I felt like I could successfully function again. Lincoln Financial was easy to work with so long as my doctors filled out the paperwork appropriately. Start seeing your family doctor now. See what he/she says. Then go from there.

yes, I did it years ago at another company. Fortunately I was already under the care of a doctor, psych, and therapist, so my case was well documented. The hostile work environment caused more stress, an increase of medication, and doubling up on therapy.

Document everything. Many STD /LTD companies deny claims almost automatically (I don't know Lincoln's track record), so be ready to fight the denial as well. Provide even more documentation if it's available. I fought my denial and was out on paid STD for several months.

Otherwise much of the information others have supplied here is correct. Follow every instruction to the letter.

My suggestions

1) call your doctor as stated by others tell him/her what’s going on and what you need
2) or you can call the employee assistance line...I’ve done this in the past. They will connect you with someone you can talk to as far as a medical help ... A psychiatrist if you don’t have one and you feel you need one
3) be sure to check the employee handbook for short term disability and FMLA and choose the best option for you ( not sure how much PTO you have to take, or how long you’ve been with WF, so be sure to take that into consideration when choosing) ...I had to use PTO to get paid for FMLA days I took off.
4) document everything, keep all doctor excuses and be sure to call and submit everything on time (I’ve been on STD twice and it’s extremely important for you to be on top of it.

One more thing I’m sure her post was meant for single parents...meaning a man or a woman (regarding the previous comment)

Good luck and feel better!

Personal experience here - if your physician supports this it is covered under FMLA and you will get paid for up to 12 weeks of FMLA. Your manager doesn't have to know the reason and can't ask. You go to the Lincoln Financial portal, sign up, give a start date and start the process. Your doctor will have to fill out paperwork, and make sure to check it all carefully and return by all deadlines. Just be sure you understand all the requirements and what you need to do/provide to keep your job secure while out on leave. Good luck to you!

I went out on stress leave years ago, it was deemed workers comp, but you have to see their doctor. I was back a week and a half later. Best best is to do shot term with your doctor so you can control the length of time out.

@ftr+17QJQdJQ What about us working Dads? Has it only been tough for females? Haven’t you been following Charlie’s diversity and inclusion crusade? Sad comment. We are an inclusive company and that means the Dads count!

Please know that although your doctor might write you out, the leave still needs to be approved by Lincoln Financial, the leave administrator. Also you don't need to let your manager know what the issue is. Depending on your relationship with your manager, it might be best to keep the details to yourself. Same with co-workers. Sadly sometimes there are people who judge you and think you're faking, especially if they are picking up your work. Good luck! I hope you feel better soon.

I was out for 8 weeks. Paid by Short Term Disability. All the details can be found in Teamworks and the Benefits SPD. Take 30 minutes to read everything and understand your options, requirements and next steps. FMLA is 12 weeks, and will run concurrently with STD. After 12 weeks you will not have job security for your position. It took me 4 weeks of adjusting on medication and I go to therapy by video weekly. I was under the care of my doctor and psychologist. Not everyone has the same recovery time or adjustment to medication. Take care of yourself and your children. It will get better with time.

if you work here here is how you find the details: look at the benefits book under medical leaves it will explain the process to get a leave there (not specially for stress) but it gives the basics. Your doctor has to determine the need for a leave, then send paperwork to the administrator who will pay via the STD program (depends on how long you've been here for amount and weeks covered pay).

good luck.

Go to your Primary Care Physician. Let them know that you are requesting a referral to a Psychologist to deal with Mental Health issues. You say “Stress Leave,” but your stress might be an underlying symptom or effect of depression and anxiety, interfering with your day to day life, sleep and work. If you need to cry, go ahead and cry. It’s okay to cry. If you need a few weeks to get better and feel better, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I’m proud of you for reaching out for help. That’s the first step to getting better. Our world has been turned upside down and we are all navigating the best we can. Between juggling children, Covid-19, job insecurity and our new temporary way of life, it’s hard on everyone. You will need to keep a digital trail of your medical records and paperwork. Follow the steps on Teamworks. You will need to use 5 days of PTO, for the Short Term Disability waiting period. Print all the forms, take it with you to your PCP, or submit digitally to your PCP. Follow the instructions. Dot every “i” and cross every “t.” Sometimes we need to talk to someone who is not family, friends or coworkers to deal with the stress that life can bring. Now more than ever. I took a few weeks off myself to get better. I wasn’t sleeping, eating or functioning. I was severely depressed. My symptoms showed as rage, irritability and hot angry crying spells. Then I would feel so heavy with fatigue and feeling gloomy like a cloud was following me around. There’s nothing wrong with taking medication to help ease the symptoms and help you function. Medication and therapy takes time, and you will get better with time. Wishing you the best for a full recovery so you can come back healthy and refreshed.

You can go on Short term disability if you are under a doctor's care. WF pays for this benefit for everyone automatically. How much of your salary you get depends on your years if service. You can do this by taking a medical leave. You should also file under Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) which allows 12 weeks of unpaid leave because it protects your job by law. Please follow instructions in Teamworks. You work through the insurance company. Good luck!

I believe stress leave is just a personal unpaid leave which has to be approved by management. But if you are seeing a doctor I’m thinking psychiatrist and diagnosed with some type of medical condition then it becomes a medical leave which I think is paid. But you would have to verify that.

I was in the same boat but was laid off in October. I start a new job at another company after Christmas. This has been an incredibly hard year for us working mom’s. Good luck to you! I did look into taking a stress leave a couple months ago. I think it may be unpaid.
