No forced rankings? LOL. They are all forced on IT managers from above. Nothing we can do but get blamed by our directs.
I admit I tuned out when he started using cars as an analogy.
During Saul's last India/Philippines town hall a couple weeks ago, he said there were going to be 3000+ technology positions opening in India, but he didn't give an exact timeline, he only said "soon". You can watch the replay, it's on Teamworks.
I submitted a question to Saul, asking how many IT positions we're going to have in India. That never got answered ... who knew? At the end of the day, we're paying them 1/3 of what we pay in the US, so there's tremendous incentive to hire over there. To hell with American workers. I just hired someone through EGS. I have no idea when I will ever be able to have him lead a conversation with one of my business partners. Won't matter to me, since I will certainly be laid off as a mid-level manager without 7+ direct reports in the next 3-4 weeks. I can't wait for the sh– to hit the fan when every business partner b–ches about the terrible support they get from our India 'employees'.
You can't automate the troubleshooting of automation. The more we automate, the more things it breaks, driving the need for larger staffs.
Jobs are being offshored because it provides a greater return for our shareholders.
That's it. That's why.
Corporations are required by law to maximize their profits and can be sued by their shareholders if they fail to do so.
And every company I've ever worked at for the last 25 years has done this.
People would get their feelings hurt less if they understood that the only thing the bank cares about is shareholder value.
And since the exec's are all sitting on piles of stock, it's all they care about, too.
If you don't like offshoring, vote better, because the real power in government is the tax laws, and it's the tax laws that encourage offshoring.

Saul is correct that there is no step you cannot automate. Automating our jobs is what all of is in IT should be working toward.
You obviously don't work here, if you did, you'd know that just because we have to attend non stop meetings, does NOT mean that the 80 hours worth of work I have to do in each 40 hour work week still needs to get done, sure, I got to listen to him waffle for an hour, that's one less hour I'll have with my kids tonight because I have to make up the time now. PS, we're doing mass layoffs, we're not dumping the work, it has not gone away.

Sadly, for him and all of us, Wells will need to spend the next five to ten years getting our systems to a state where we can be automated.
Right now, trying to automate most of our IT process and procedures would be like going back in time 10,000 years and trying to automate building a fire.
Even if Wells was willing to invest the time and money needed to get us updated, our history of big IT projects is not good. We tend to make more work, not less.
