Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

The truth is that senior level executive positions are never posted internally or externally

While this is not occurring only at Wells Fargo, it is absolutely part of the problem. How do qualified candidates ever know there is a position in order to submit their resume?

For years, I have watched Golden Boys easily move up the corporate ladder without anyone knowing there was ever a job opening. Meanwhile, a more qualified candidate such as my manager with his MBA from SLU, never was given an equal opportunity. Because he was working instead of glad-handing.

Charlie already knew exactly who he wanted, based on the privileged individuals already running in his circle. And no one else ever had the opportunity to submit a resume. And then he did not become committed to diversity until it became a potential PR issue.

These are the same misleading and deceptive practices that have kept women out of the C-Suites as well. Shut us out from the beginning, and then if people speak up, claim there aren’t enough qualified candidates

Those roles are for the owners of this country, they don’t have to do silly things like apply for jobs

They’re like Charlie, shipped off to work as an intern by dad at 13 in a NYC firm

While you were making cold cut combos at Subway, Charlie and friends were learning how to run the financial system

I guess you can probably work your way up to AVP, seems like anyone with a pulse can make that around here

im not shifting blame here bc i agree with the op 100% but when they truly dont know who they want to hire and dont have someone in mind, they go to head hunters and its the same old story. their pool of talent consists of a bunch of white guys that deal and golf together. Same result.

@nhq: I don’t suppose you realize you just inadvertently supported OP’s point. Nice.

@kgk. Spot on! I have a friend who wanted to do an MBA instead of buying her home a few years ago when the real estate was still affordable. My friend didn't listen and went ahead to do her MBA. Now, she ends up with student debt, a false dream of ladder climbing, no house of her own and hit by continuing rent hikes. I know I ain't in the club so I have forgone doing grad school and have bought my place instead a few years ago when homes were still affordable.

@lui+175MyQcG I've never had a manager at WF whose job I couldn't do within months of taking the position.

Yet I was held back from multiple promotions because I wasn't expensive enough to promote.

It's always been and always will be about who you know.

You have be doing 900% of the job prior to a promotion. Promotions aren't given for you to learn most of the skills on the job.

Geez people - For SLT positions, you get invited to apply. Period. And guess what else? If you're invited to apply and you don't get the job, it probably means you've reached the limits of your career here and it's time to leave. Ever wonder why SLT's up and leave for no apparent reason?

This site is as bad as QAnon with the conspiracy theories.

yeah - if we need to lead ourselves, the question is - why do we keep all these leaders on the payroll?

It's always about who you know, not what you know.

Couldn’t agree more. And it’s not just senior execs, there’s downstream impact. Think about the folks in lower paying admin jobs who are told to “lead yourself” meaning we ain’t helping you climb the ladder, you’re on your own. Okay, a new senior exec comes onboard and maybe one of these self-led individuals expects an opportunity. Surely, an exec assistant role will open up. Umm, no. They bring their own people. Step to the back of the line bc these jobs ain’t posted. I guess that’s how Jamie Dimon’s SIL got a job reporting directly to Charlie.
