Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

No more phones... period

Have been notified that when my cellphone life cycle ends they won't replace. I am 100% telecommute. Given the option to use my phone but not willing to risk potential legal hold , not to mention unwilling to pay for their phone. Are they just okay with my co-workers and managers not being able to reach me?
Does anyone know if there will be exceptions? I've asked management 3 levels up but nobody seems to know anything.

@4kbn+171002AE keep shilling for WF. I noticed you're not using the car analogy any more.

I have come to the conclusion that some of you have no idea how things work in the real world. Very few if any companies provide phones or reimburse for phones.

I’ve downloaded google voice app and am using that number for work. I will not be installing work apps on my personal phone.

just request cisco jabber to be installed on your work laptop and viola - you have an office phone. I haven't had a phone on my desk for years.

@3klq+171002AE - no, you're not getting it. Having a car does not negate the fact that WF pays for mileage if you are performing a WF task. Imagine if WF asked an employee to hand deliver laptops on the eastern seaboard using their own vehicle, and did not pay the employee for mileage. That's the expansion of your two phones analogy. WF either reimburses for use, or they provide the vehicle. It's not complicated unless you're bending over backwards to defend WF.

I think you folks are missing the point of the car analogy.

What we are saying is that like the car, clothes and internet, the mobile phone has become so mainstream that nearly everyone has one. Since I already have one why would I expect my employer to provide another one.

I don't mind using my personal phone for calls and texts and to access email, but I draw the line at having something installed on it by the company. Aside from privacy concerns, what if my phone were confiscated while the company is, say, under investigation?

I totally understand why they're doing it. Do I like it? No. Why should I pay for a phone so I can be available at any hour for company business? That said, I will end up putting the blackberry app on my personal phone b/c I need to have my calendar available.

That said, if you're in California there are certain restrictions on what the company needs to reimburse or not.

For those throwing out the dumb argument about driving your car to work, it's not the same. If you drive your car for company business, you get mileage reimbursement. If you buy a meal on a business trip, it's on the company dime. There's a difference between what's a legit business expense and what isn't.

Oddly enough my 2 year period ran out months ago and while I wasn't allowed to upgrade, I haven't gotten anything saying I need to go to my own phone. I'll wait it out and do it when they force me too.

bottom line– it's coming, deal with it.

This must be a sign that layoffs are happening tomorrow as rumored, and people are losing their ever-loving minds. I've never seen a dumber string on this site, and it's gone on longer than should be possible.

Corporate iPhones are going away, whether you like it or not. Want to ask for an exception? Please do, you don't need to announce it to the world.

Refusing to download the app for BYOD, come what may? Same.

Love BYOD and don't understand the fuss? I'm with you, now let's move on.

Some on this string won't even have a choice to make, because soon they'll be jobless. So please just do WHATEVER YOU WANT.

@2xwx and @2xwx

Lmao, you're the corporate buttboys. Anything your manager says you just blindly follow. I am not installing anything on my personal device for corporate use and no one can force it. It's simply unprofessional. And yes, it does hurt me because with unlimited plans after you use so much data, the vendor throttles you. So get your facts straight dumb–s. You have no clue of what you speak simpleton, but you keep doing you MAGAt. It's just precious.

@2xwx+171002AE I've seen the car analogy a couple of times on these posts. I'm assuming it's a scripted statement that is being pushed. I'm not the person below, but the car analogy is completely off base, but let's got with it. If you use your personal vehicle for company use, they reimburse you per mile traveled, because you're performing a company function. Driving to work is not a company function. Using my phone to call my manager and let them know I'm quitting is not a company function, but using my phone to perform anything that benefits WF's bottom line is a company function. You may want to go back and redo those logic classes you missed.

You’re the one b–ching about having to use your phone, but I’m the snowflake? Ha!!!

Should they pay for your car if you have to drive to the office? Your button down shirt and khakis? What about the coffee that perks you up and allows you to work better?

You are just fishing for another thing to whine about. How does being forced to use your own phone actually hurt you? It doesn’t. You just want something to be grumpy about.

I find it hard to believe that the posts complaining about this BYOD thing are genuine and not just trolls. It is such a non-event and non-worry to me. I’m bitter about the internet stipend loss from back when. The only thing I’ll miss from losing the phone is the free unlimited Hot Spot. If you’re just a little tech savvy this is a zero cost change and no co-mingling of personal with professional assets.

@2wrd, I so agree! But, OP is one of the good ol' boys and his third-line manager is his friend, so he is good to go!! He is an old-timer that is part of a clique. He is so secure that he can spend all his days whining about a phone when there are people fighting for their lives with no job and no food on the table to feed their family.

The only annoyance is the requirement to use an iPhone or Samsung device. While I understand the technical and security reasons behind this - Apple is a closed system, Samsung has Knox - plenty of people don't have either of these nor want to own these brands. So many people will simply have voice and text but no BlackBerry container.

It’s 2020. Everyone working at this company already is paying for a phone that can handle the BlackBerry container without incurring any extra cost. Get over it.

Thanks for schooling us. Has it ever occurred to you that YOU might be the one missing the point? Folks can go back and forth about this all day. WF does not appear to share your OPINION that, in an age where cell phones are ubiquitous, they should have to supply you with a unique cell phone just for work.

So by all means, dig in your heels. Issue ultimatums. Complain loudly to management and colleagues. I have opinions too, including... As the ax is poised to drop on 1/4 of the company, employees' energy could be better spent elsewhere. In the end, Charlie and company will decide what they'll pay for. Good luck with those exception requests, though!

Folks making arguments for mandatory BYOD are missing the point. A company should not ask employees to foot its bills. I'm also all for things being negotiable. Take me off a layoff list, make telecommuting permanent and I'll do byod for mobile devices including my laptop. I am all-in for a voluntary BYOD program. It should be mutually beneficial and reasonable.

IT people that don't accept change are worthless as an organization shifts. I watched them all go at 2 different orgs when they wouldn't let go of the mainframe and and AS/400 as they systems were being sunset.

Two things:

  1. Skype. Learn it, use it.
  2. Use your own phone or go back into the office.

Simple pimple.

Lots of accurate info here.

Your personal phone will have one single app for containing your WF stuff. It's basically email and remote intranet browser should you choose to use it as such.

Phone calls won't even be necessary. The bank is transitioning to skype calls, you should be able to epro a headset that will work with that, I just did at my 2 up's direction.

You also shouldn't be called off-hours because that's what EGS is for now, unless it's escalation which should be going to your manager anyway.

What's the big fuss?

Get a soft phone on your computer like everyone else is doing now. Then you don't need to use your phone. It's still provided by WF and just makes calls on your laptop. They were giving everyone free headsets last year that work with the soft phones too. Problem solved.

BYoD is my only contact number. It’s even in teamworks. So you were in another company more than 22 years ago? Not relevant at all.

I even use my own car to drive to the office, I’ll buy my own clothes, pay for my own lunch, use my own mouse, bring my own wireless keyboard and gladly use my one and only phone to check email, look at my calendar and take calls. It’s just not that big of a deal and doesn’t cost me any thing extra. In fact, my unlimited plan costs me $30+tax so I’m happy to help my employer save some $.

Oh yeah and I’m a 50 yo that fully understands that no job is guaranteed. I’ve been laid off twice in my career and this will likely be number 3 unless I find something first.

I haven’t used a desk phone in over 5 years. I don’t want to remember another VM password.

You’re being a big baby! Now as the other person said take your ball and go home.

Yes, you can get an exception but it needs to come from Executive level. Good luck with that :)

You have adapted "fantastically" after 22 years at the same company? And yet you can't figure out a solution when told it will no longer pay for a corporate cell phone you feel you are entitled to? You just say you'll stop answering your phone, like a kid who threatens to take his ball and go home?

For sure, that's very fantastic.

@1lax Of course the Blackberry MDM CAN allow them to log text messages. Like they do on the Corp devices. The MDM can allow many things. The key is that you can evaluate what is in the policy and make a decision if you want to allow it.

Some of you need to loosen up the tin foil hats just a bit...

Actually, I do know. My career exceeds 22 years. I seriously doubt that you are in a position where your BYOD is your only contact number. I don't give a c-ap about access to email - I just don't want calls on personal time because MY PERSONALLY PAID FOR NUMBER is listed on the company website. I'd bet you have a "desk" number that shows up on Teamworks. If not... You're willing to give way too much to a company that'll get rid of you in nothing flat. Personally, I figure you are either a troll trying to instill fear or just one of those that has yet to learn that kissing up gets you nowhere .
